DragonSword Awakening Skill Upgrade Order: What to Level First

A stamina-efficient upgrade path that keeps your main damage dealer, Signal Skills, and break tools ahead of tougher bosses.

A stamina-efficient upgrade path that keeps your main damage dealer, Signal Skills, and break tools ahead of tougher bosses.

Skill upgrade materials in DragonSword Awakening are gated behind daily stamina, so every point you spend early either compounds into a stronger team or gets stranded on a skill you rarely use. Pouring resources into the wrong abilities stalls progress right when Tower of Trials floors and higher-difficulty bosses start punishing weak synergy. The safest path invests in survival first, then damage, then the swap engine that makes the three-hero system work.

Quick answer: Upgrade in this order — foundational stamina and mobility (dodge invulnerability frames) first, then your main damage dealer’s active heavy finishers and status applicators, then off-field Signal Skills and Tag-In triggers, then Armor Rend and Break Gauge skills, then Karma traits, and finally first-node Awakening traits through Stigma Awakened Stones.

Skill upgrade priority order

The ranking below reflects how much each layer scales your combat, from staying alive to squeezing extra multipliers out of a finished build. Work top to bottom and do not skip ahead to Karma or Awakening until the earlier tiers are stable.

1Stamina and mobility skillsInvulnerability frames and gap-closing keep you alive through boss patterns
2Main damage dealer active skillsHeavy finishers and fast elemental debuffs carry your core damage
3Signal Skills and Tag-In triggersBigger swap-in damage and lower swap cooldowns

Start with stamina and mobility

Surviving a boss fight depends on your dodge more than your damage. Foundational stamina and mobility skills extend your invulnerability frames and let you close distance quickly, which is what keeps you inside a fight long enough to land anything else. Switching heroes already grants a short window of invulnerability, so pairing strong dodges with well-timed swaps covers most incoming attacks.

Lock these in before touching offensive skills. A high-damage build that dies to the first unavoidable pattern spends stamina you cannot afford to waste.

Invest in your main damage dealer’s active skills

Once mobility is secure, funnel resources into the active abilities of your primary damage dealer rather than spreading them across the roster. Two categories matter most. Heavy attack finishers break enemy posture, and status applicators inflict fast elemental debuffs such as Burn, Frost, or Poison.

These debuffs do double duty. They add damage over time and they trip the status thresholds that light up an ally’s portrait, which is the trigger for the swap-in combos covered next. Leveling skills toward their higher ranks is worth the Skill Scrolls you earn from Regional Missions, so prioritize the abilities you actually use in your rotation.

Level Signal Skills and Tag-In triggers

Signal Skills are the engine of high-level combat. When the active hero pushes an enemy past a status threshold like Stun, Freeze, Bleed, or Airborne, a waiting teammate’s Signal Skill becomes available. Upgrading these switch-in abilities does two concrete things — it raises the damage multiplier during continuous combos and it cuts swap cooldown timers, so you can cycle all three heroes without gaps in your chain.

Off-field heroes still benefit from this investment even when they are not your main. A support unit whose Tag-In trigger is upgraded contributes far more to a rotation than an under-leveled backup, which is why this tier sits above raw shield-breaking.

Add Armor Rend and Break Gauge skills

Elite enemies and bosses carry super armor that resists Stun, Knockdown, and Airborne until their protection is broken. The white poise bar under an enemy’s health shows this state, and once it is depleted the target becomes far easier to control. Armor Rend and Break Gauge skills — especially on heavy weapon users — chip through those guard shields quickly and open the stagger windows where your heavy finishers land for maximum damage.

Upgrade these once your main skills and Signal chain are working, since they multiply the value of everything you already built rather than replacing it.

Improve Karma weapon traits

Karma sits on a hero’s weapon slot and is a separate power layer from your skill levels. Its traits can grant super-armor on important attacks or completely change a weapon’s strike pattern, so a well-chosen card reinforces the finisher and break-focused skills you already leveled.

Keep two rules in mind when investing here. The card’s element must match the hero or the trait lines do not apply properly, and you ascend a card by feeding it duplicate copies of the exact same Karma, up to Rank VI. World Bosses matching your main’s element are the most reliable daily source of those duplicates.

Finish with first-node Awakening traits

Awakening is a six-tier system that advances heroes beyond their skills and Karma. Unlocking the first-node traits for your support and burst units gives party-wide attack buffs and stat multipliers, which is the final layer that makes each daily stamina point pay off across the whole team.

Awakening runs on Stigma Awakened Stones, and each Stigma Awakened Stone costs 200 Fragment of Sacred Light, farmed from exploration chests and regional mini-bosses. Because full Awakening takes six tiers, treat the first node as the priority and save deeper investment for the one or two heroes you main.

How to spend daily stamina without stalling

Skill Scrolls and upgrade materials come from your daily loop, so the fastest teams are the ones that never waste a run. Clear Regional Missions for medals that buy Skill Scrolls, farm mini-bosses for Fragment of Sacred Light, and pick World Bosses whose element matches your main hero to raise the odds of useful Karma. Enemies refresh at 9:00 local time.

Note: build one solid three-hero team before trying to raise a second. A single well-upgraded squad can push tower floors and gather the materials you need, while spreading stamina across backups leaves everything half-finished.

You will know the priority is working when your main lands finishers inside stagger windows, teammate portraits light up on cue for Signal Skills, and swap cooldowns fall short enough to keep a combo rolling. Once that loop feels smooth against a normal group and a boss-style enemy, the remaining Karma ascensions and Awakening tiers are simply refinements on a foundation that already carries you.
