Traits and variants are the two systems in Drill for Brainrots that decide how much cash a brainrot earns and how much it sells for. Traits come from timed map events, while variants are tied to specific Worlds you unlock by drilling through each map's deepest area. Both are separate from mutations and stack with them.
Quick answer: Traits (Volcanic, Starfall, Bloodmoon, Bubblegum) come from random 5-minute events that occur every 30 minutes; variants (Candy through Light) are determined by the World a brainrot spawns in, with multipliers ranging from 2x to 512x.

How traits work in Drill for Brainrots
Traits are temporary spawn modifiers tied to in-game events. When an event begins, every brainrot that spawns across the map during that window carries the matching trait, shown as a label above the brainrot's name. The trait multiplier applies to both earning rate and sale value.
Events run on a fixed cadence. One event triggers roughly every 30 minutes and lasts about 5 minutes. Only one event is active at a time under normal conditions. During an Admin Abuse session, multiple events can overlap, which is the most reliable window to collect rarer traits without waiting for the natural rotation.
A brainrot can only carry one trait at a time, but a trait stacks with a mutation and with the variant of whichever World it spawns in.

All traits, multipliers, and event sources
| Trait | Multiplier | Event source |
|---|---|---|
| Volcanic | 4x earnings and sale value | Volcanic Event |
| Starfall | 5x earnings and sale value | Starfall Event |
| Bloodmoon | 6x earnings and sale value | Bloodmoon Event |
| Bubblegum | 7x earnings and sale value | Bubblegum Event |
Bubblegum is the strongest trait by raw multiplier, but its event is the rarest natural spawn. If you are hunting Bubblegum specifically, the Admin Abuse window is the practical way to farm it because it can force the event to overlap with others.
How variants work
Variants are not events. Each variant is locked to a specific World, and any brainrot spawning in that World inherits that variant automatically. The variant multiplier is permanent on that brainrot and applies to both earning rate and sale value, just like a trait.
You start the game with only the Normal World available. To progress, you have to drill all the way down to the Best Ancient area at the bottom of your current World, then use the portal that appears there to unlock the next one. The Worlds unlock in the same order as the variant table below.

All variants, multipliers, and World sources
| Variant | Multiplier | World |
|---|---|---|
| Candy | 2x | Candy World |
| Frozen | 4x | Frozen World |
| Water | 8x | Water World |
| Toxic | 16x | Toxic World |
| Lightning | 32x | Lightning World |
| Glitch | 64x | Glitch World |
| Cursed | 128x | Cursed World |
| Void | 256x | Void World |
| Light | 512x | Light World |
Multipliers double with each World, so the deeper you progress, the more aggressively your earnings scale. Light is the highest at 512x and is the endgame target for variant farming.
Stacking traits, variants, and mutations
The three systems are independent and combine multiplicatively. A single brainrot can carry one variant (set by the World), one trait (set by an active event during its spawn), and one mutation such as Gold, Diamond, Galaxy, Lava, or Rainbow.
The strongest possible combination in the game is a Light-variant brainrot with the Rainbow mutation and the Bubblegum trait. That stacks 512x (Light) with 10x (Rainbow) and 7x (Bubblegum) on top of the brainrot's base earning rate and sale value.

How to confirm a trait or variant on a brainrot
Trait labels appear as text above the brainrot's name (for example, "Volcanic" or "Bubblegum"). Mutation labels appear underneath the name (for example, "Golden", "Diamond", "Rainbow"). Variant identity is implicit because every brainrot in a given World carries that World's variant by default. If a brainrot spawned in the Frozen World, it is a Frozen variant, full stop.
If you grab a brainrot during an event and the trait label is missing once it is placed on your plot, the spawn happened outside the event window. Wait for the next event cycle and grab a fresh one.
Trait hunting rewards patience and timing, while variant farming rewards depth progression. The fastest path to high earnings is to push to the deepest World you can sustain, then use event windows, especially Admin Abuse, to layer rare traits and Rainbow mutations onto brainrots that already carry a strong variant multiplier.
