In Enshrouded 1.0, a Flame Altar is upgraded along two separate tracks. Strengthening the Flame raises your character’s power and opens new regions. Upgrading the Altar grows the build zone around one specific altar. The Flame track runs from Level 1 to Level 11. The Altar track stops at Level 4. Each one has its own materials and its own rules.
Quick answer: Reaching Flame Level 11 takes ten upgrades and 266 Spark in total, a boss trophy for every step after the first, and 18 survivors with sheltered beds for the last step.

Flame Altar menu: Strengthen the Flame vs. Upgrade Altar
You craft the Flame Altar by hand from 5 Stone. The recipe unlocks once you accept the Claim A Spot For Your Base quest. Anything you build or dig inside the altar’s zone is permanent. Changes outside the zone reset after 30 minutes or when the game restarts. Interacting with an altar gives you four options.
- Strengthen the Flame upgrades your character, so every altar you own benefits from it.
- Upgrade Altar enlarges the build zone of that one altar, so you upgrade each altar separately.
- Reset Skills costs 1 Runes for each skill point you spent.
- Extinguish Flame destroys the altar and frees its slot so you can place one somewhere else.
Starting with 1.0, each Flame upgrade automatically makes the following crafting tier’s armor sets available, without requiring you to collect specific resources.

These are the 1.0 recipes. In 1.0, Keen cut the resource amounts for the Level 6 through Level 9 steps, so costs you remember from Early Access for those levels are now lower.
| Upgrade | Survivors | Spark | Other materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 → 2 | 0 | 1 | 5 Resin, 5 Penny Bun, 5 Bones, 5 Shroud Liquid, 5 Animal Fur |

| 3 → 4 | 4 | 10 | 15 Goo, 15 Corrupted Boar Tusk, 15 Indigo Plant, 15 Amber, 15 Copper Ore, 1 Fell Wispwyvern Head |
| 4 → 5 | 6 | 20 | 20 Mint Mushroom Meat, 20 Fossilized Bone, 20 Ammonia Gland, 20 Tin Ore, 20 Rooibos, 1 Fell Monstrosity Head |

| 6 → 7 | 10 | 30 | 30 Wool, 30 Gentian, 30 Ice, 30 Granite, 30 Flammable Goo, 1 Fell Cyclops Head |
| 7 → 8 | 12 | 40 | 40 Obsidian, 40 Silver Bars, 40 Mauveine, 40 Wolfsbane, 40 Amethyst, 1 Fell Dragon Youngling Head |
| 8 → 9 | 14 | 50 | 50 Gold Ore, 30 Green Vitriol Dust, 30 Passionflower, 50 Aquamarine, 30 Pearl, 1 Hydrak’Dal Head |

| 10 → 11 | 18 | 20 | 10 Celestium Bars, 15 Moonstone, 20 Diamond Dust, 15 Ember Carapace, 1 Vorgoth’s Bound Essence, 1 Vorgoth’s Eye |
The Level 3 step requires 2 survivors, and each step afterward raises that number by 2. A survivor counts only once sheltered and assigned a bed. Craftspeople, assistants, and villagers qualify; assistants are easiest to find in large numbers.
Spark is the one ingredient every level asks for. You collect it at Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums, which appear on the map as golden flames. The Hidden Flame Shrine quest also rewards it. Across all ten steps you need 266 Spark, and the Level 10 step alone takes 60.

Flame Level benefits: altar cap, water, and Shroud time
Each level raises your Shroud Passage Level by one, and it always matches your Flame Level. A higher passage level lets you enter the red Deadly Shroud areas of the next tier. If a Deadly Shroud zone blocks you, the fix is the next Flame upgrade. Each level also adds +1 to all your core attributes, starting at Level 2.

| Flame Level | Max Flame Altars | Water sources | Region opened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 1 | — |
| 2 | 4 | 1 | Springlands |
| 3 | 6 | 1 | Revelwood |
| 4 | 8 | 5 | Nomad Highlands |
| 5 | 10 | 10 | Kindlewastes |
| 6 | 11 | 20 | Albaneve Summits |
| 7 | 12 | 30 | Albaneve Summits |
| 8 | 13 | 40 | Veilwater Basin |
| 9 | 14 | 50 | Veilwater Basin |
| 10 | 15 | 50 | Cinder’s Cradle |
| 11 | 16 | 50 | Cinder’s Cradle |
Your base time in the Shroud is 6 minutes at Level 2 and rises by 1 minute per level, reaching 13 minutes at Level 9. Deadly Shroud does not use this timer.
Level 10 is the state you carry into Cinder’s Cradle, with room for 15 altars. Level 11 can only be reached after you defeat Vorgoth. It raises the world cap to 16 altars, which is the most the game allows at once. It also lets your Flame Altars push the Shroud back, and altars can then be placed in areas that used to be fogged. Some of the outermost map borders stay covered in Deadly Shroud even at Level 11.
On a dedicated server, the flameLevelFogRemoval setting (default 11) controls the Flame Level at which altars can go into the Shroud. Lower it in the world settings if you want that ability earlier.
Boss trophies for each Flame upgrade
The trophies set the order of your progress. You can’t skip a step, so each boss below stands between you and the next level.
| Trophy | Upgrade | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| 2 → 3 | Scavenger Gorger or Grizzler Matron, Hill of Scavengers (Springlands) | |
| 3 → 4 | Fell Wispwyvern, a flying boss | |
| 4 → 5 | Fell Monstrosity, Cradle of Dusk (Nomad Highlands) | |
| 5 → 6 | Fell Sicklescythe, Ternion Mine (Kindlewastes) | |
| 6 → 7 | Fell Cyclops (Albaneve Summits) | |
| 7 → 8 | Fell Dragon Youngling, a flying boss | |
| 8 → 9 | Hydrak’Dal, temple in Veilwater Basin | |
| 9 → 10 | Cromville Throne Room (Veilwater Basin) | |
| Vorgoth’s Bound Essence, Vorgoth’s Eye | 10 → 11 | Vorgoth, the final boss (Cinder’s Cradle) |
Several trophies can also come from quests. The Scavenger Matron Helmet is a reward from A Crucial Investigation and The Alchemist’s Rumors.

The Fell Sicklescythe Head is a reward from Sun Temple Stories. Fell Sicklescythes also lurk in Sun Temples and Elixir Wells across Kindlewastes.

Completing Ignite The Coldest Elixir Well also awards the Fell Cyclops Head. The Fell Dragon Youngling Head is a reward from Slaying The Corrupted Beast.

To reach Hydrak’Dal, rescue the Fisher survivor. That starts the Vengeance quest chain, which leads to the boss’s temple. The Broken Guard Of The North Crown sits on a plinth at the end of the red carpet in the Cromville Throne Room, inside the ruined castle in northern Veilwater Basin. Picking it up completes Crown Of Sorrow.
Vorgoth waits at the summit of the Ancient Citadel in the Sky Islands. Reach it via the Gate to the Stars at Cinder’s Ascent, unlocked after freeing Loraine Crim and clearing six beacon dungeons. One kill yields Vorgoth’s Bound Essence, along with Vorgoth’s Eye.

Where to find Flame upgrade materials, by region
Most ingredients come from the region that the previous level opened. The rest come from crafting stations at your base.

Springlands and Revelwood (Levels 2–4)
- Penny Bun, Bones, and Flintstone come from the Springlands.
- Salt and Shroud Liquid come from the Springlands Shroud. Mycelium grows in the Shroud.
- Harvest dead trees in the Shroud for Shroud Wood. Resin is found most often on stumps and trees with red foliage.
- Animal Fur drops from animals. The Hunter can also make it from String plus a Fur Patch or Wet Boot.
- Copper Ore and Indigo Plant are found in Revelwood. Amber comes from the Revelwood Shroud.
- Corrupted Boar Tusk drops from Fell Boars in the Revelwood Shroud.

Nomad Highlands and Kindlewastes (Levels 5–6)
- Rooibos grows in the Nomad Highlands. Mint Mushroom Meat and Tin Ore come from the Nomad Highlands Shroud.
- Fossilized Bone comes from Giant Fossils.
- Ammonia Gland drops from Fell Mushroom Crabs in the Nomad Highlands and Kindlewastes Shroud.
- Saffron and Lapislazuli are found in Kindlewastes. Iron Ore and Brittle Shroud Flakes come from the Kindlewastes Shroud.
- Enshrouded Vulture Talon drops from Fell Draconian Vultures in the Kindlewastes and Albaneve Summits Shroud.
In 1.0, Fell Vultures drop more talons per kill, so the 30 talons for the Level 6 step take less farming than they did before.

Albaneve Summits (Levels 7–8)
Gentian, Ice, Granite, Obsidian, Wolfsbane, and Amethyst all come from the Albaneve Summits. The Level 7 and Level 8 steps also need processed goods. Wool is made at the Spinning Machine, Flammable Goo and Mauveine at the Laboratory, and Silver Bars at the Blast Furnace.
Veilwater Basin (Levels 9–10)
- Gold Ore drops from Drak enemies or sits underwater. The area around Dragondream Lake is good for both.
- Aquamarine is mined from rocks around the basin, with several spots near Dragondream Lake.
- Pearl comes from clams on the lakebed near Starfish Shores and from random Drak drops. Mother of pearl does not count.
- Passionflower only appears at night in the basin’s woods. Look for its pink glow.
- Drak Blood drops from Veilwater Basin enemies. Daylily grows in the basin, including around Queen Jezmina’s Camp.
Green Vitriol Dust is made at the Laboratory. One craft turns 3 Sulfur, 2 Iron Dust, and 5 Water into 5 dust and takes 180 seconds. Iron Dust comes from the Mill.

For the Level 10 step, Gleam Root grows along waterways such as Starfish Shores. It only glows blue at night. A powered Mill, running from a water wheel or windmill, grinds it into Gleam Root Dust. The same Mill turns Fish Teeth or Fish Bones into Piscine Ivory Dust. You can find Fish Teeth and Fish Bones in pots and crates at Drak camps. Shroud Sludge comes from the Alchemist.

Cinder’s Cradle (Level 11)
- Celestium Ore is mined in Cinder’s Cradle, including on a floating island near the Island Ruin tower. The Blast Furnace smelts it with Coal into Celestium Bars.
- Moonstone comes from large automatons and from smashing jars and urns in the ruins.
- Diamonds turn up in urns and ruins. The Mill grinds them into Diamond Dust.
- Ember Carapace drops from scorpions near the lava beds of Cinder’s Plains.
Upgrade Altar: build zone sizes and Shroud Core costs
Upgrading an altar makes its building area longer, wider, and taller. Every altar starts at Level 1, and each one has to be upgraded on its own. Level 4 is the highest level in 1.0.
| Altar Level | Build zone | Cost | Flame Level needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 40x40x40 | None | 1 |
| 2 | 80x80x80 | 1 Shroud Core | 1 |
| 3 | 120x120x120 | 5 Shroud Core | 2 |
| 4 | 160x160x160 | 5 Shroud Nexus | 3 |
Shroud Core is a rare material. The Alchemist crafts it after you have picked up Shroud Spores, and Fell bosses drop it. Taking one altar to its maximum costs 6 Shroud Core and 5 Shroud Nexus. Boss trophies are never part of these costs.

How to strengthen the Flame and confirm it worked

A successful upgrade shows a Level Up! notice and a New Location Charted! alert, because the next region’s Shroud is now open to you. Your quest tracker moves on as well. At Level 11, you can also see the Shroud pull back from around your altars.
