Enshrouded 1.0: How to Farm Shroud Wood Early

Where dead Shroud trees grow near Braelyn Bridge, which axe to bring, and how much wood your first Glider and Flame Altar upgrade cost.

Shroud Wood is the corrupted cousin of ordinary Wood Logs in Enshrouded, and you’ll want it within your first few hours in Embervale. It feeds the Glider, the Scrappy tools, and the Flame Altar upgrade to level 3. The catch is that it only grows inside the Shroud, so every haul runs against a timer.

Quick answer: Take any axe into a Shroud zone, chop the grey, leafless dead trees, and pick up the Shroud Wood they drop. The dry riverbed under Braelyn Bridge is a convenient early spot.

Where Shroud Wood comes from

Shroud Wood is a Common material at item level 5, and it stacks to 250. It drops only from dead trees that grow inside the Shroud. Healthy trees outside the fog give you regular Wood Logs instead, no matter which axe you swing at them. No single location is required. Any Shroud-covered area with dead trees will do.

Here is what a run requires:

  • An axe in your inventory before you enter the fog. The starting Axe works.
  • Dead trees with grey trunks and no leaves, which are easy to pick out from living ones.
  • Enough time on the Shroud timer at the top of the screen to get in, chop, and get out.
  • A route back to clean air, because fast travel is locked while you are inside the fog.

Before you’ve upgraded your Flame Altar, the timer gives you five minutes in the Shroud. That is plenty for a handful of trees if you don’t wander far from the edge.

Braelyn Bridge Shroud Wood run in the Springlands

The Shroud pocket under the broken Braelyn Bridge sits close to Longkeep. It has a short exit route, and that matters more than tree count when you only have five minutes.

Head north from Longkeep until you reach the broken Braelyn Bridge. Make sure your axe is in your inventory before you go any further.
Find the ramp on the right side of the bridge and walk down it. It drops you into a dried-out, Shroud-covered riverbed beneath the span, and your Shroud timer starts as soon as you enter the fog.
Chop the dead grey trees nearest the ramp first. Each felled tree drops Shroud Wood logs on the ground, and you collect them by picking them up.
Grab every log before you move to the next tree. Keep an eye on the timer as you work outward.
Walk back up the ramp well before the timer runs low. Once you are out of the fog, fast travel works again.

Wandering too far from the ramp can derail an early run. If the timer expires before you reach clean air, the Shroud corrupts your character. You can make another trip to collect a second load.

Enshrouded: the player moves through the Shroud with the 4:54 timer running, while the Rested effect shows Sheltered and ‘Reach The Plains’ is the tracked quest.

The run worked when Shroud Wood shows up in your inventory. The first time you pick some up, the game also teaches you the Glider recipe, since Shroud Wood is one of the pickups that unlocks it. If you finish chopping with time to spare, the same fog holds mint mushrooms that drop Shroud Liquid and weak Fell enemies that drop Shroud Spores. You’ll need both later.

Which axe to bring for Shroud Wood

Any axe chops dead trees, but a stronger one fells them faster. That means more wood per timer. All axes swing at the same 0.774-second attack speed. The difference is in cutting damage and perks.

Axe is the starter tool. It has no perks, but it is enough to pull your first batch of Shroud Wood.

Scrappy Axe is the best first upgrade. It grants Lumberjack 1, Stamina 4, and Stamina Regeneration 3. At the Blacksmith, craft it beneath a roof, spending four Metal Scraps, one Shroud Wood, and three String. A single trip with the basic Axe provides enough wood for the craft.

Copper Axe and Bronze Axe follow once you have the bars. Both keep Lumberjack 1 and raise the stamina perks, so you can chop for longer before stamina runs out.

How much Shroud Wood early recipes need

Some recipes take a single piece. Others take a stack, and some larger furniture pieces use more than 20. Plan your runs around the table below so you don’t end up making a second trip for two missing logs.

The full Flame Altar upgrade costs 10 Shroud Wood, five Sparks, 10 Wax, 10 Flintstone, 10 Salt, one Scavenger Matron Helmet, and 25 Mycelium. Upgrading the altar also extends how long you can stay in the Shroud, so later wood runs get easier.

The Glider is the most useful early target, and it needs eight logs. With the Scrappy Axe and Scrappy Pickaxe on top of that, about 10 pieces covers every early tool. The altar upgrade adds 10 more. Bringing home roughly 20 on your first couple of Braelyn Bridge trips handles all of it, with a few left over for building blocks.
