A Story of Rot is a quest given by The Flame in Enshrouded, and its first objective, Discover The Shroud Obelisk, sends you to an Ancient Obelisk in the Springlands. The marker sits east of the Ancient Spire – Springlands, roughly 1,100 meters out, and reaching it is a short traversal run rather than a fight.
Quick answer: Fast travel to the top of the Ancient Spire – Springlands, glide east-northeast toward the quest marker, cross the shroud valley on foot, follow the road past the Midwife Catacombs, and approach the glowing obelisk in the forest clearing.
Before you start: quest requirements
A Story of Rot becomes available after you complete Flame Altar And Base Improvements (1). The quest runs two stages and is completed once per character. Reaching the obelisk only needs a glider, which you already carry during normal Springlands progression.
Prerequisite: Flame Altar And Base Improvements (1) completed.
Difficulty: Moderate.
Target location: Ancient Obelisk, east of the Ancient Spire – Springlands.
Fast travel to the Ancient Spire – Springlands and head to the top teleporter balcony. This is the highest launch point near the marker and gives you the altitude you need to glide most of the way.
Open the Journal and confirm A Story of Rot is tracked, then check the map. The yellow quest marker sits east of the spire, and the HUD compass shows a heading between East and East-Northeast at roughly 1,100 meters.
Jump off the eastern railing and deploy your glider, steering east-northeast toward the marker. Glide as far as your stamina allows across the high forested ridges before you touch down.
Land on the ridge above the shroud basin, run forward, and glide briefly over the fog-filled gorge. Cross this enshrouded stretch quickly so your shroud exposure timer does not force a retreat, then climb out onto the forested slope on the far side.
Follow the dirt trails uphill until they join a cobblestone road. Keep moving east and you will pass the entrance to the Midwife Catacombs, which charts as a new location and grants 200 XP along the way.
If you lose track of the marker, open the map and re-check your heading. Keep the diamond ahead of you and continue east-northeast along the mountain trails through the forest.
Continue past the roadside ruins until the trail opens into a clearing. The towering Ancient Obelisk, covered in glowing purple runes, stands in the center. Walk up to it to discover the location.
Approaching the obelisk charts the Ancient Obelisk location and awards 600 exploration XP. The Discover The Shroud Obelisk objective then clears and the quest advances to its second stage, Read The Springlands Obelisk Of The Shroud.
For that next stage, interact with the obelisk to read its text. The Springlands obelisk carries the inscription titled “In A World Destined For Ruin,” which reveals part of The Flame’s lore about Embervale. Reading all of the Springlands obelisks also counts toward the Springlands secret keeper achievement.
The green stamina ring around your character shows how much glide and sprint you have left. Save enough to clear the shroud valley in one pass rather than landing inside it.
