Skills in Paralives decide how good your Parafolk is at specific tasks, from cooking dinner to writing code. They feed into job postings, unlock work perks and salary bumps, and occasionally unlock Together Cards once a Para hits a certain level. Every skill grows the same basic way, but the speed changes based on your Para’s knowledge, traits, and current mood.

How skills level up in Paralives
Practicing an activity slowly fills a progress bar. When it fills, your Para gains a level in that skill. You can level most skills three ways. Read a book on the topic, study it on a computer, or do a hobby that uses the skill directly.
Skills are grouped under broader knowledge categories. Music, Food, Fitness, Technology, Art, Repair, and Science are the knowledge skills. Each one sits above the smaller skills tied to it. Raising a sub-skill also feeds its knowledge skill, and a higher knowledge skill speeds up every sub-skill beneath it. For example, building your Music knowledge makes Guitar, Piano, and Triangle climb faster, and practicing Guitar in turn pushes Music up so Piano becomes easier later.

The table below covers the skills available to Child through Elder Parafolk, grouped by their knowledge category. Knowledge skills are marked, and the actions listed are the fastest ways to grow each one.
| Knowledge skill | Sub-skill | How to improve it |
|---|---|---|
| Music | — | Study it on a computer, read Music books, or play the Guitar, Piano, or Triangle. |
| Music | Guitar | Practice or play songs on the guitar. A higher Music level speeds this up. |
| Music | Piano | Practice or play songs on the piano. A higher Music level speeds this up. |
| Music | Triangle | Play songs on the triangle. A higher Music level speeds this up. |
| Food | — | Study it on a computer, read Food books, and cook meals. |
| Food | Cooking | Study it on a computer or cook food. |
| Fitness | — | Study it on a computer or read Fitness books, then hit the gym or dance. |
| Fitness | Exercise | Do floor exercises, use exercise machines, or have your Para run or jog. |
| Fitness | Dance | Dance anywhere by clicking a spot in the world and choosing “Dance Here.” |
| Technology | — | Study it on a computer or read Technology books. |
| Technology | Programming | Select a computer, choose “Practice…”, then “Programming.” |
| Technology | Graphic Design | Select a computer, choose “Practice…”, then “Graphic design.” |
| Art | — | Study it on a computer, read Art books, or paint on an easel. |
| Art | Painting | Paint on an easel, which you can buy for your home from the start. |
| Repair | — | Study it on a computer, read Repair books, or fix broken items like public benches or a home fridge. |
| Science | — | Study it on a computer or read Science books. Surgery, Biology, and Astronomy also feed it. |
| Science | Surgery | Listed as computer study, but currently raised only through specific occupation perks. |
| Science | Biology | Listed as computer study, but currently raised only through specific occupation perks. |
| Science | Astronomy | Listed as computer study; using a telescope currently raises Science knowledge, not Astronomy. |
Repair is the only knowledge skill for this age group with no sub-skill attached. Note that the in-game descriptions say Surgery, Biology, and Astronomy can be studied on the computer, but that option does not appear to work in early access. Selecting Science only raises the knowledge skill itself, and a telescope outside boosts Science rather than Astronomy. These three appear to climb only through certain occupation perks right now, which may change in a later patch.

How to level skills faster
The most reliable way to speed up a sub-skill is to push its knowledge skill higher. If you want fast Cooking gains, build the Food knowledge first by reading Food books, studying Food on a computer, and cooking repeatedly. The higher the knowledge level, the quicker every skill underneath it rises.
Traits and emotions also change the pace from moment to moment. A happy Para, or one with a talent matching the skill, learns faster. A Para who is tired, hungry, or angry learns much slower and may stop improving entirely. If progress stalls, take care of the Para’s needs and emotions, then resume.
You can check the current learning speed by hovering over a skill in the Skills menu while it is actively leveling. The number of white arrows on the skill bar shows how fast that progress is moving.

Skills by life stage
Skills are not the same across every age. The list above applies to Child through Elder Paras. Physical skills like Fitness depend heavily on age, and some skills can only be reached at higher levels by older Paras. Underage Paras can also be limited to practicing certain skills in a group. Cooking is one example, since using the stove and sharp tools needs adult supervision.
Babies and Toddlers are too young for the regular skill list. They have their own short set instead, and these do not belong to any knowledge category.
| Skill | Who can learn it | How to improve it |
|---|---|---|
| Language | Babies and Toddlers | Use Together Cards in a group with them to push their progress. |
| Potty | Toddlers only | Practice using the potty. |

Maximum skill level in Paralives
Every skill currently caps at level 20. This applies during early access, and it is not confirmed whether the cap will rise before or at the full 1.0 release. Not every level unlocks something new yet, since the per-level content is still being built out. You will know a skill maxed when its bar reaches level 20 and stops filling.

There is also no apparent limit on how many different skills a single Para can pick up or master, so you are free to spread one Para across music, fitness, and tech, or keep them specialized for a single career. As the game grows out of early access, expect more skills, more life-stage detail, and the chance that the level cap moves upward.
