Far Far West: Area 41 Train Wreck Location and Black Box Guide

The Area 41 train wreck is the third and final Mysterious Train Wreck objective in Far Far West, and clearing it is what flips the switch on the Far Far North map. The wreck has no map marker, the Railroad Worker only appears once you reach the crash site, and the run only counts if you finish the boss and extract back to the Saloon.

Quick answer: Unlock Area 41 by finishing Dr. Spark-Twist’s questline on Desert, then head to the east side of the Area 41 map. Look for the smoke pillar near the giant bones and spiky rocks, talk to the Railroad Worker, hold the moving green ring to 100% black box download, kill the map boss, and extract.

Area 41 train wreck location

The wreck sits on the eastern side of Area 41. The clearest landmarks are a column of smoke rising from the crash, a cluster of giant bones, and the jagged spiky rock formations around them. Some routes also describe it as the northeast portion of the map, so once you spawn, ride east and follow the smoke until you see the broken train cars and the Railroad Worker NPC standing next to them.

You will not see a quest icon for the train wreck on the world map. The Railroad Worker is the trigger, not a map pin.

Requirements before you can start

Two unlocks have to be in place before the Area 41 wreck will progress your Far Far North path.

Area 41 map unlocked	Complete Dr. Spark-Twist’s “The Great Marauder” questline on the Desert map (Fighting Spy and Mass Surveillance, both extracted successfully).
Far West train wreck cleared	Northeast corner of Far West, above Willy Billy. Black box to 100%, boss down, extract.
Canyon train wreck cleared	Southeast corner of Canyon, between the cliffs. Same black box objective, then extract.

If any of those is missing, the Area 41 wreck will still play out, but Far Far North will not unlock at the end.

How to complete the Area 41 black box extraction

Spawn into Area 41 and ride east toward the smoke pillar near the giant bone field. Approach the wrecked train cars until the Railroad Worker becomes interactable.

Speak to the Railroad Worker and accept the black box task. A green ring appears on the ground around the wreck and the download progress bar shows 0%.

Stand inside the green ring. The bar only fills while at least one player is inside it. The ring relocates at intervals, so move with it the moment it shifts and re-enter the new circle quickly to avoid stalling progress.

Fight enemies only when they enter the ring or directly block you. Chasing kills outside the ring is the most common reason runs drag and the wave timers stack up. Heal when needed, then return to the ring immediately.

Hold the ring until the download reaches 100%. The Railroad Worker will confirm extraction, and the map’s main boss objective continues as normal.

Defeat the Area 41 map boss and extract safely at the train back to the Saloon. The run only counts toward the unlock if you extract — dying or failing extraction wipes the credit.

How to know it worked

After a successful extraction from the Area 41 wreck, the Mysterious Train Wreck questline closes out and Far Far North appears as a selectable region on the map list the next time you start a run. The lore prompt around the questline references Papa Marquette 1225 and the line “if this train is coming from somewhere not on the rails… I wanna go there,” which ties directly into the Far Far North reveal.

Common reasons the Area 41 wreck does not count

You stepped out of the green ring for too long and the download stalled before 100%.
You hit 100% on the black box but died before extracting at the train.
You skipped the Far West or Canyon wrecks, so Area 41 is the only one credited and Far Far North still stays locked.
Area 41 was unlocked through a partial Dr. Spark-Twist run where one of the two objectives (Fighting Spy or Mass Surveillance) was not extracted.

Tip: Treat the train wreck as a hold-the-zone objective, not a clear-the-map objective. The boss fight and extraction come after the black box hits 100%, and that order is what makes the unlock register.
