Gifts are the fastest way to build heart levels with the residents of Mistria, and each person rewards you differently depending on what you hand over. Loved gifts push the relationship meter up the most, liked gifts help too, and the wrong item barely moves the needle. If you want to marry a partner and eventually have children, you need those hearts, so it pays to know exactly what to carry in your bag before you knock on someone’s door.
Quick answer: Give a character one of their loved gifts once per day to raise their heart level fastest, and never hand over Junk items, bugs, or animal treats (Weird Gifts), which almost everyone in town dislikes.
How gifting affects heart levels
You can give each villager one gift per day. A loved gift grants the biggest friendship boost, a liked gift a smaller one, and most other items give only a token amount. Handing someone a disliked or hated item will not lower your heart level or damage the relationship, so there is no penalty for a wrong guess beyond a wasted turn.
Birthdays multiply the reward. Even an item a character hates still returns 20 friendship points on their birthday, so save a loved gift for that day whenever you can. A couple of rules limit what you can hand out at all. You cannot give alcohol or caffeine to children or animals, and neither Dozy nor Henrietta will take chocolate.
Hearts on a character’s profile mean they can be romanced, while gems mean they can only be friends. To marry a partner and start a family, you need to reach heart level 10, and the surest route there is a daily loved gift.
Universal gifts everyone reacts to
A handful of items work on nearly the whole town, which makes them useful when you are unsure of someone’s tastes. There are also two blanket categories almost everyone rejects. Junk items cover Acorns, Cattail Fluff, Fiber, Hay, Newt, Pinecone, Sap, and Sod, while Weird Gifts are animal treats. The only exceptions are Dozy, who loves Dog Treats, and Hayden, who is neutral toward every animal treat.

There are 34 characters to befriend, but only some can become a spouse. If your goal is romance and children, focus your loved gifts on these villagers.

The table below lists each villager’s loved gifts alongside the single item they hate most and any wider category they reject. Junk, bugs, and Weird Gifts apply to nearly all of them and are left out of the table to keep it readable, so treat those as off-limits by default.

A few tastes stand out and are worth planning around. Hayden’s loved list is almost entirely golden animal products, which require farm buildings, animals, and high animal hearts, so his regular milk and eggs make solid stopgap gifts while you work toward the golden versions. March ignores anything he can’t use at the forge, so bring him ores and ingots from the mines rather than flowers or foraged goods. Golden animal products, perfect gems, and refined ingots reappear across many loved lists, making them reliable stockpiles once you can produce them.
Note: Terithia loves Fiber even though it counts as Junk for the rest of the town, and Zorel loves Morel Mushroom, an item Adeline hates. Cross-check the table before you assume an item is safe or wasted, since a single villager can flip a general rule.
Keep a rotating supply of loved gifts on hand, talk to each villager daily, and reserve their best items for birthdays to climb heart levels with the least effort. Since hated gifts never cost you progress, the only real mistake is skipping a day, so hand something over even when you’re low on their favorites.
