Fields of Mistria: How to Unlock Fishing and the Best Fish to Catch

Fishing in Fields of Mistria is locked behind a single item, a fishing rod, and you don’t start the game with one. Once you have a rod equipped, you can cast into almost any pond, river, or ocean tile, then sell your catch for Tessarae, gift it to a partner, or donate it to the Museum.

Quick answer: Buy the Worn Fishing Rod from the Tackle Shop for 500 Tessarae, or craft the Copper Fishing Rod at the Blacksmith after you unlock the Mines and reach Blacksmithing Level 4. Equipping either rod unlocks fishing immediately.

Two ways to get a fishing rod

The fastest route is buying the Worn Fishing Rod at the Tackle Shop on the beach for 500 Tessarae. The moment it enters your inventory, fishing is unlocked. If you would rather save the money, you can craft a rod instead, but that path takes longer because it depends on mining and blacksmithing progress.

Crafted rods are made at the Blacksmith’s anvil and each one costs four ingots. A single Copper rod, for example, needs four Copper Ingots, which you smelt from 40 Copper Ore. Higher-tier rods use Iron, Silver, and Gold ingots and reach farther, so the metal you use directly sets your cast range.

Note: The Copper rod is worth crafting even though it costs time, because its cast range of 8 beats the Worn rod’s 6 by two tiles. That extra reach matters when a fish shadow sits far from the shore.

How to cast a line and reel in a fish

Casting itself uses no stamina, so you can re-aim as many times as you like. Stamina is only spent once a fish is actually caught, and bigger fish drain more of it. Small fish cost 6 stamina, medium 13, large 20, and the biggest catches 26.

Reading fish shadows by size

Every fish casts a shadow in the water, and the size of that shadow tells you what you are dealing with before you cast. If you are hunting a specific size, you can leave the map and return to reset the spawns until the right shadow appears.

Best fish to catch: the four Legendary fish

The most valuable catches in the game are the four Legendary fish, each worth 500 Tessarae. They only appear after you reach fishing Level 30 and unlock the Legendary skill from the Statue of Caldarus on your farm. Once that skill is active, you get an in-game notification under the calendar date at the start of any day one of them is nearby.

Each Legendary fish is tied to a single season, a specific weather condition, and a shadow size, so you need to line up all three before you head out.

For the Snow Fish, the small island west of the main shore is a productive spot, and you can refresh the ocean spawns by stepping in and out of the Tackle Shop. Upgrading to the Silver rod helps here since it casts farther. Level 30 skills like Perfect Catch, which makes uncommon and rare fish appear more often, speed up the hunt.

When you catch a Legendary fish, donate it to the Museum’s Fish Wing rather than selling it. It goes on display there, and completing the wing with all four rewards you with exclusive items such as furniture and treasure boxes.

Other high-value fish worth targeting

If you are fishing for Tessarae rather than the Museum, a handful of rare fish sell for well above the common range. The Razorback and Shadow Bass stand out among river catches, while the deeper mine biomes hold the priciest non-Legendary fish.

Fish spawn according to season and weather, so check both before you set out for a specific catch. A rod in hand unlocks the whole activity, and from there it is a matter of matching the right water, weather, and shadow size to whatever you are chasing.
