Ignis is the first of five descendants you have to satisfy during Mariana’s Awakening, and his task, Cinder and Ash, sits at the bottom of the lava parkour in Volcanic Vents. It is a short quest on paper — two fish — but both targets demand a specific mutation, a specific rod, and a weather and season combination that will not line up by accident.

Quick answer: Using the Volcanic Rod, Perfect Catch 2 Ashen Fortune Charred Coelacanth and catch 1 Ashen Fortune Obsidian-Plated Piranha, then talk to Ignis for the Volcanic Gauntlets.

Ignis quest objectives and fishing conditions

Both objectives have to be completed with the Volcanic Rod equipped. A stronger general-purpose rod can land the fish and still fail to advance the tracker, so treat the rod as a hard requirement rather than a suggestion.

Catch 1 Ashen Fortune Obsidian-Plated PiranhaWormSummer, DayRain

The mutation wording is the part that trips people up. An ordinary Charred Coelacanth or Obsidian-Plated Piranha does nothing for the quest — the catch has to roll the Ashen Fortune mutation. On top of that, the Coelacanth line asks for Perfect Catches, meaning the marker has to stay inside the control bar for the entire reeling minigame.

Where Ignis is in Volcanic Vents

Ignis stands opposite the Volcanic Rod vendor in the main lava cavern, at roughly (-3343, -2028, 4076). That is the same open chamber at the end of the southern parkour route from the submarine dock, so a Glider or Advanced Glider makes the trip far less painful.

If Ignis has no quest to offer, the questline itself has not started. Mariana’s Awakening begins with Vaelor at Roslit Bay, and speaking to him is what makes the five descendant tasks live. Having Volcanic Vents already unlocked saves the whole submarine trip, since the update sends you back through layers you have likely cleared before.

Volcanic Vents still runs its heat system, and touching lava is an instant death. Keep the Glimmerfin Suit or Scoria Armor on and set your spawn with the Innkeeper before you settle in for a long grind.

Gear and setup before you cast

The Volcanic Rod is sold in the layer at 250,000 C$, near coordinates (-3180, -2035, 4020). Buy it first if you skipped it on your original run through the Veil, because nothing about this quest works without it.

Since both targets are gated behind a mutation, the rest of your loadout should be built around mutation chance rather than raw luck. The Mutated Sharky companion raises your odds of rolling a mutation and is the single most useful thing you can equip here.

Weather is the other lever. The Piranha needs rain during a summer day, which you are unlikely to catch naturally on a short session — a Tempest Totem forces rain on demand and lets you start fishing immediately instead of waiting out the cycle.

  • Volcanic Rod equipped (mandatory for both objectives)
  • Mutated Sharky companion for mutation chance
  • Worm bait for the Piranha, Squid bait for the Coelacanth
  • Totems to force rain or clear weather as needed
  • Heat protection and a spawn point set at the Vents

Catching the Ashen Fortune Obsidian-Plated Piranha

Set the conditions to summer, daytime, with rain active. Equip Worm bait and the Volcanic Rod, then cast into the lava pool in the main cavern where Ignis is standing.
Reel each hooked fish normally. This objective only asks for one catch and does not require a Perfect Catch, so the goal is volume — the more Piranha you land, the more chances the Ashen Fortune mutation has to appear.

Check the catch banner for the Ashen Fortune prefix. Once it appears, the objective ticks over — and you should leave that fish in your inventory rather than selling it until the tracker has visibly updated.

Perfect Catching the Ashen Fortune Charred Coelacanth

Swap to Squid bait and shift conditions to night with clear weather, in either summer or autumn. The Coelacanth will not bite outside that window.
Cast into the same lava pool and play the reeling minigame carefully. Because this objective counts Perfect Catches, any slip outside the control bar wastes the attempt even if the fish rolls the right mutation.

Repeat until you have two Perfect Catches on Ashen Fortune Charred Coelacanth. Expect several correct-species catches before the mutation lands; that is normal for these descendant tasks.

Turning in Cinder and Ash and confirming it worked

With both lines complete, walk back to Ignis and speak to him again. The quest closes out with +50,000 XP and the Volcanic Gauntlets, and the dialogue will not offer the reward if either objective is still short — that is your confirmation that everything registered correctly.

The Volcanic Gauntlets are worth equipping straight away. Their ability periodically slashes a hooked fish, which speeds up progress during the reeling bar — useful on the heavier catches waiting in the deeper layers.

Where the Volcanic Gauntlets fit in Mariana’s Awakening

Ignis is one piece of a five-part chain. Each descendant sits in their own layer of Mariana’s Veil, uses that layer’s rod, and hands over a gauntlet when their task is done.

All five gauntlets are needed before the questline moves on to the Crevice Wall, the layer gems, and the Abyss Gate that opens the Obsidian Trench. Glacius is the next stop after Ignis, waiting opposite the Challenger’s Deep Rod at (738, -3355, -1529) with a Challenger’s Rod requirement of his own.
