Fisch Rod Progression Guide: Carbon Rod to Nocturnal Rod

How to unlock each core rod in order, from the 2,000 C$ Carbon Rod to the infinite-weight Nocturnal Rod.

How to unlock each core rod in order, from the 2,000 C$ Carbon Rod to the infinite-weight Nocturnal Rod.

Moving up the rod ladder in Fisch is the fastest way to earn more money and level faster. Five rods carry you cleanly from a fresh start to a strong late-game setup, and each one either sits behind a shop price or a specific quest. Get them in order and every step pays for the next.

Quick answer: Buy the Carbon Rod (2,000 C$) at Moosewood Village, earn the Fungal Rod from the mushroom NPC in Mushgrove Swamp, buy the Carrot Rod (75,000 C$) in the hidden Carrot Garden, finish the Dead Mans Tale quest to buy the Great Rod of Oscar (2,500,000 C$) in Oscar’s Locker, then buy the Nocturnal Rod from the Mysterious Shadow at the Shady Bazaar.

Rod progression order, prices, and stats

Each rod below is a clear upgrade over the last in either money-earning mutations, luck, or weight capacity. Use this to plan how much you need to save before moving on.

Carbon Rod: the beginner money-maker

The Carbon Rod is the rod to grab first. It costs 2,000 C$ and is sold by the Merchant in the Moosewood Village shop area. It handles common early fish well enough to build the small bankroll you need for the next quest, so fish at Moosewood until you can afford it and keep selling your catch.

Fungal Rod: catch an alligator in Mushgrove Swamp

The Fungal Rod is a quest reward, not a shop item. Travel to Mushgrove Swamp and speak to the mushroom NPC to begin the task, which asks you to catch an alligator in the nearby marsh.

Bring the alligator back to claim the rod. Its stats are Lure Speed 40%, Luck 45%, Control 0, Resilience 20%, and a 200 kg max weight. The real value is its passive, a 30% chance to trigger the Fungal mutation, which applies a 4x value multiplier and roughly doubles the money you earn per fish.

Carrot Rod: the hidden Carrot Garden

The Carrot Rod is sold for 75,000 C$ inside the Carrot Garden, a hidden cave reached through a small crawlspace in Mushgrove Swamp. Once inside, fish the carrot-shaped pond, which is a strong spot for both XP and cash.

Its stats are Lure Speed 85%, Luck 125%, Control 0.15, Resilience 25%, and a 10,000 kg max weight. It has a 15% chance for the Carrot mutation, worth a 5x multiplier, plus a 10% chance to summon a Carrot Pool that lasts 30 seconds and gives every fish caught inside it a 50% chance to gain the Carrot mutation.

Great Rod of Oscar: complete the Dead Mans Tale quest

The Great Rod of Oscar is a high-tier rod locked behind the Dead Mans Tale questline. It costs 2,500,000 C$ and sits in a sealed chamber called Oscar’s Locker that only opens once you have the quest’s Amulet equipped. Before you start, it helps to pick up a Smokescreen Totem for 2,000 C$ at Mushgrove Swamp.

Travel to Forsaken Shores, enter the cave, and climb the ladder to the top. Speak to the NPC Dead Man Joe to begin the Dead Mans Tale quest.

Return to Forsaken Shores and talk to Dead Man Joe again to advance the quest.
Go to Terrapin Island, sail around to the back side, and move southeast to find the hidden underwater cave entrance.
Open your inventory and equip the Amulet. This protects you from the deterioration damage inside the cave, so do not skip it.
Swim to the bottom of the cave, follow it to the end, and rise into the dry chamber of Oscar’s Locker.

Buy the Great Rod of Oscar from the treasure pile for 2,500,000 C$. The rod carries Lure Speed 95%, Luck 280%, Control 0.1, Resilience 20%, and a 100,000 kg max weight, along with a 2.25x XP boost from its Clever mutation.

Note: If the chamber will not open, the Amulet is almost always the reason. It must be equipped from your inventory before you enter, or the door stays shut.

Nocturnal Rod: buy it from the Mysterious Shadow

The Nocturnal Rod, also called the Noise Form Rod, is the top of this progression. It is sold by the Mysterious Shadow NPC at the Shady Bazaar in Moosewood. Its stats are Lure Speed 125%, Luck 290%, Control 0, Resilience 65%, and, most importantly, an infinite max weight, so no catch is ever too heavy.

On top of a flat 25% weight and XP boost, it has two heavy money mutations. There is a 35% chance for the Soul mutation, worth a 9x multiplier, and a 25% chance for the Flower mutation, worth 7x. Those odds make it the strongest earner of the five and the rod to settle on once you can reach it.

Follow the order and each rod funds the next: the Carbon Rod builds your first savings, the Fungal and Carrot mutations speed up the grind, and the Great Rod of Oscar’s XP boost pushes you toward the Nocturnal Rod’s infinite weight and high-value mutations. Confirm each unlock the moment it lands in your inventory, then keep fishing until you can afford the step above it.
