Fortnite: How to Deal Damage With Junk Rifts (300 Damage Quest)

The quest needs 300 total damage, and one Junk Rift thrown at a large tree or building finishes it.

The Junk Rift damage quest looks like it wants a fight, but it does not. The item opens a rift overhead that drops a heavy prop, and everything that prop lands on takes damage. Trees and buildings count, which turns a 300-damage requirement into a single throw.

Quick answer: Equip a Junk Rift, throw it directly at a large pine tree or a house, and let the falling object crush it. The counter jumps to 300 / 300 and the quest pays out 15,000 XP.

What counts toward Junk Rift damage

Damage from the Junk Rift is not limited to opponents. When the rift opens, a large object plummets down and destroys everything in its path, then creates a small shockwave on landing that damages whatever is still in range. Structures, props, and terrain objects all take that damage, and it feeds the quest counter.

That matters because of the numbers involved. A direct hit deals 200 to a player and the shockwave deals 100, so hunting people would mean landing multiple throws. Against structures the item deals thousands of points, which is why one well-aimed rift clears the entire 300 requirement at once.

Where to find a Junk Rift

The Junk Rift is an Epic-rarity utility item that appears in floor loot, chests, Supply Drops, and Llamas whenever it is in the loot pool. It drops two at a time and you can carry four, so a single pickup gives you a spare in case your first throw goes wide.

Landing at a dense named location is the fastest way to get one in hand. High-tier loot spots stack chests close together, and you only need one Junk Rift and a backup weapon before you go looking for a target.

How to complete the Junk Rift damage quest

Pick up a Junk Rift and select it in your inventory. Keep a weapon such as a Burst SMG in another slot so you are not defenceless while you set the throw up.
Find a large, solid target. A tall pine tree works, and so does any house, shed, or player-built wall. Bigger objects give the falling prop more to destroy, which is exactly what you want.
Stand a short distance back and throw the Junk Rift straight at the target. It breaks on contact with the surface, so aim at the trunk or the wall rather than at the ground beside it.

Back off and wait. A horn sounds, the rift opens overhead, and a heavy prop such as an anchor, a buoy, a broken car, or a metal Triceratops falls onto your target. Give it room, because the shockwave will hurt you if you are standing underneath.
Watch the quest counter. The impact destroys the tree or structure, the tracker fills to 300 / 300, and a “Quest Completed!” banner appears with +15,000 XP. The prop that lands stays in the world and can be harvested like any other structure, and the rift also spits out materials, ammo, or low-tier weapons on the way.

Using structures and builds as targets

Player-built forts are the other reliable option, and they double as a combat play. The falling object smashes through builds on its way down, so a rift thrown at someone’s box collapses the walls and exposes whoever is inside. That is the same reason it clears a Port-a-Fort in one go.

Tip: If you are throwing at a build during a fight, keep your distance. Direct hits knock players back slightly, and at close range the blast radius can catch you as well as the person you are aiming at.

Why the counter might not move

The most common reason for zero progress is an empty landing zone. The prop only registers damage against what it actually hits, so a rift thrown into flat open ground with no trees, buildings, vehicles, or players in the path has nothing to damage.

The other issue is throw distance. The item breaks where it makes contact, and the object spawns several metres above that point, so a throw that sails past your target opens the rift somewhere else entirely. If your first attempt misses, the second Junk Rift from the same stack gives you a clean retry.

One rift on a big enough target is all this takes, and the XP lands the moment the prop hits the ground. Grab the item early, aim at the nearest treeline or house, and you can be done with the challenge within the first minute of a match.
