Paimon finally asks it outright in the Snezhnaya audience chamber. Why has the Fatui spent years prying Gnoses out of every Archon in Teyvat? Anastasya answers without hedging, and the answer has two halves: one about raw power, one about a locked relic sitting a few rooms away from where she is standing.
Quick answer: Two reasons. The gathered Gnoses amplify elemental power past the limits of Archon authority so Snezhnaya can fight the Heavenly Principles, and only the complete set can open the Third Descender’s sealed crystal.
The two stated motives, side by side
Both motives come from the same conversation, and Paimon restates them together once Anastasya finishes so there is no ambiguity about which is which.
| Motive | What the Gnoses do | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Power amplification | Boost elemental affinity past Archon authority | The Heavenly Principles and its four Shades |
| Unsealing | Act as the only key that the seal responds to | The Third Descender’s crystal relic |

Add to Google Preferences →Motive 1: Elemental power beyond Archon authority
Anastasya describes the Gnoses as concentrations of elemental affinity that raise whoever holds them above the ceiling Celestia set for an Archon. A single Gnosis already sharpens a god’s command over the elements. Gathered together, they push the bearer past the authority that was handed out after the Archon War, which is precisely the limit she wants to break.

The opponent is named plainly. She is preparing to move against the Heavenly Principles and the four Shades that reach into everything in Teyvat, which she identifies as Life, Death, Time, and Space. That scale explains why nothing short of the full set would do.
The amplification works because of what the Gnoses are made from. They were forged out of the remains of the Third Descender, which is also why the Ley Lines cannot permanently hold the destroyed Pyro Gnosis.
Why Snezhnaya needs that power now
When the Traveler asks whether she is chasing strength beyond an Archon in order to fight the Heavenly Principles, Anastasya turns the question into a matter of survival. Snezhnaya’s civilian and military technology has already crossed the line of what the Heavenly Principles permit, and the nation lives under the standing threat of a Divine Nail of Retribution falling on it.
Vir draws the obvious conclusion out loud. This is not an ideological rebellion that Snezhnaya chose for the sake of principle. It is a fight the nation cannot step out of, because the punishment is already hanging over it.

Motive 2: The Third Descender’s sealed crystal
Anastasya then gives the second reason by showing it rather than describing it. She presses the snowflake relief on the chamber wall, a hidden doorway opens, and she leads the Traveler and Paimon down a long hallway into an inner sanctum.

At the end of it stands an enormous glowing crystal. Anastasya identifies it as a relic the Third Descender left behind before Celestia killed them, and she states the condition for opening it. The seal answers only to the gathered Gnoses, so a partial collection is worthless for this purpose. That makes the missing Pyro Gnosis a hard obstacle rather than a rounding error.
The same Third Descender power shows up again a few minutes later in the transcription prism she uses to record her memories, a device Pierro explains sits outside the reach of Teyvat’s laws. It is a small detail that reinforces why the Descender’s remains are the one material she builds her plans around.
What the Gnoses are not for: her authority over love
One thing the collection is explicitly not about is her own divine ideal. Asked about her domain of authority, Anastasya confirms it is love, then refuses to use it or be identified with it. In her account, a god’s love for humanity is not genuine feeling but a cheapened curse that the Heavenly Principles carved into the gods.
So she declines to perform an emotion she considers manufactured and fights for Snezhnaya’s future instead. The Gnoses serve that political and existential goal, not the authority Celestia assigned her.

Where the Gnosis count stands after the conversation
Six Gnoses reached the Fatui through a mix of force, contracts, and trades, which is why Anastasya opens the audience by asking about the seventh. The Pyro Gnosis is the only one she never located.

After it was consumed alongside Irminsul and sent back into the Ley Lines, she regards the event as postponement rather than failure. Since the Gnoses originate from the remains of the Third Descender, she believes the Ley Lines will ultimately force it out.
How you know the scene is finished
The finale brings Pierro in with word that everything is ready for an experiment involving the Ruler of Death. Anastasya then records her memories and cautions Danica about her earlier encounter with the Traveler at Podvorye Restaurant.
Upon regaining control in the overworld, you unlock the achievement The Seven. The quest objective for Light and Shadow, Intertwined then switches from following the Tsaritsa to going to the Armory Palace.
Taken together, the audience converts a six-year mystery into a concrete plan with a bottleneck. Anastasya has the motives, the technology, and six of the seven pieces, and the seventh is currently dissolved in the Ley Lines with no fixed timetable for coming back out.
