Genshin Impact: Best Cryo Traveler Build and ATK vs CRIT DMG Circlet

Damage tests and stat scaling show which circlet and main stat line actually wins on Cryo Traveler.

Damage tests and stat scaling show which circlet and main stat line actually wins on Cryo Traveler.

Cryo Traveler is a free 5-star Cryo sword user unlocked at the Statue of the Seven in Snezhnaya, and the build question that keeps coming up is not which artifact set to farm — it’s what to put on the circlet. Because their passives convert ATK into Elemental Mastery and into a Stellar reaction damage bonus, a triple ATK line looks tempting on paper. The damage tests say otherwise.

Quick answer: Run ATK% sands, ATK% goblet, and a CRIT DMG circlet on 4-piece Disenchantment in Deep Shadow. That line beat a triple ATK build by roughly 2% and an EM sands variant by roughly 3% in back-to-back boss runs, and it wins in theorycrafted team DPS too.

ATK vs CRIT DMG circlet: The damage numbers

Three main stat lines were run against the same boss with the same character, weapon, and set — Exaiphanes Blade and 4-piece Disenchantment in Deep Shadow — changing only the sands, goblet, and circlet main stats. Total team damage came out like this.

Main stats (sands / goblet / circlet)Total damagevs best
ATK / ATK / CRIT DMG539,726Best
ATK / ATK / ATK528,733-2.0%
EM / ATK / CRIT DMG523,181-3.1%

The gaps are small, which is exactly why the triple ATK build feels viable — and it is playable if that’s the only clean piece you own. But it loses in every run, and it loses more the higher your existing CRIT DMG pool gets.

Swapping the ATK circlet for CRIT DMG while keeping the burst rotation identical produced the highest total of the three, and the burst is where most of that gap shows up. Frostbound Javelin fires multiple instances, so every point of CRIT DMG gets multiplied across all of them.

Why ATK% beats Elemental Mastery on the sands and goblet

Stellar-Conduct and Stellar-Swirl damage both scale off ATK%, Elemental Mastery, and CRIT — so EM is never dead on Cryo Traveler. It’s just second in line, because two of their passives read ATK directly.

Lucent Ice converts 8% of ATK into Elemental Mastery, capped at 160 EM. Stellar Jubilee: Illusory Frostmirror adds 0.35% base reaction damage per 100 ATK, capped at 7%. Both caps land at 2,000 ATK, which is easy to hit with an ATK sands or goblet. Stacking EM main stats instead means you pay twice for the same stat and give up the passive bonuses.

Main stat lineTeam DPS% of best
ATK / ATK / CRIT DMG158,452100%
ATK / EM / CRIT DMG154,30697.4%
EM / EM / CRIT DMG148,69393.8%

Tip: keep at least one ATK% main stat on either the sands or the goblet. The second piece can be ATK% or EM, whichever has the stronger substats — that swap costs under 3%.

Substat priority: what each roll is actually worth

On an ATK / ATK / CRIT DMG build, a single substat roll adds roughly this much damage.

SubstatDamage per roll
CRIT Rate / CRIT DMG+0.80%
ATK%+0.54%
Elemental Mastery+0.31%

Energy Recharge sits below all of these — take only as much as your rotation needs. The practical order is CRIT Rate, then CRIT DMG, then ATK%, then EM, then ER.

The CRIT Rate overcap trap

This is the part that decides your circlet. Cryo Traveler pulls CRIT Rate from an unusual number of places at once, and it stacks up fast.

SourceCRIT Rate
Exaiphanes Blade (secondary stat)33.1%
Disenchantment in Deep Shadow 4-piece16% (vs Superconduct/Stellar-Conduct targets)
Cryo resonance15%
Anemo element resonated (Foreign Permafrost)10%
Character base5%

Add those up and you’re already near or past a comfortable rate before a single substat. That’s why a CRIT DMG circlet is the default: a CRIT Rate circlet on top of Exaiphanes Blade frequently pushes you over 100% against Stellar-Conduct targets, and everything above that line is wasted.

The blade also gives 608 base ATK and, at R1, 16% ATK plus 3 Energy every 5 seconds after hitting an opponent. It’s free from the 7.0 Snezhnaya Archon Quest and refined by leveling the region’s Statue of the Seven, up to R3 in 7.0. From R2 onward it adds 6% CRIT DMG per element the Traveler has resonated with, up to 42% — more reason the circlet does not need to be CRIT Rate.

When a CRIT Rate circlet is the right call

Use CRIT Rate only if you are not on Exaiphanes Blade, or if your artifact substats are heavily skewed toward CRIT DMG and your rate sits well under the 1:2 ratio. The target is roughly 70% CRIT Rate and 140% or higher CRIT DMG before conditional buffs. Whichever stat is further from that ratio is the one your circlet should fix.

Stat targets and Energy Recharge requirements

Frostbound Javelin costs 60 Energy and should go off every rotation, but the ER requirement drops sharply with more Cryo units in the party.

StatTarget
ATK~2,400 (2,000 caps both passives)
CRIT Rate~70%
CRIT DMG140% or higher
Elemental Mastery150–200
Energy Recharge (second Cryo unit)120–140%
Energy Recharge (third Cryo unit)100–110%

Favonius weapons elsewhere in the party cut those ER numbers further. Note that Exaiphanes Blade’s own 3 Energy every 5 seconds also chips away at the requirement, even off-field.

Artifact sets that change the calculation

4-piece Disenchantment in Deep Shadow is the on-field pick: 18% ATK on the 2-piece, plus 80% Superconduct damage, 40% Stellar-Conduct damage, and the conditional 16% CRIT Rate. Two-piece ATK% and EM combinations work as a placeholder while farming, but they land around 11% behind.

In Stellar-Swirl teams, where Cryo Traveler plays off-field and contributes roughly 30% of team damage, support sets can be worth more than personal damage. Heart of the Furnace gives the wearer 12% ATK for 12 seconds on a Stellar Glimmer trigger and hands 50% Stellar Glimmer reaction damage to nearby party members. Tenacity of the Millelith is the easier option if Odette already holds the Furnace set, since the Traveler’s off-field Ice Fog Piercer ticks keep the 20% party ATK buff running. Either way, the circlet answer does not change — CRIT DMG stays the default.

How to check you got it right

Open the character’s attribute screen with the full team assembled and check three lines: ATK at or above 2,000, CRIT Rate near 70% before the artifact set’s conditional bonus, and CRIT DMG at 140% or more. If CRIT Rate is already above 90% before you factor in the 16% from Disenchantment in Deep Shadow, you are overcapping and should be moving CRIT Rate substats or the circlet toward CRIT DMG.

The margins here are narrow enough that a well-rolled ATK circlet with strong CRIT substats can outperform a poorly-rolled CRIT DMG one. Build around the piece you actually have, keep at least one ATK% main stat to feed the passives, and treat the CRIT DMG circlet as the target rather than a hard requirement.
