Glacial Bolt Mercenary Build for Path of Exile 2 (Screen Shatter)

How the frost shatter combo clears packs, holds back enemies, and scales into T15 maps and Atlas bosses.

The Glacial Bolt Mercenary in Path of Exile 2 turns ice walls into screen-wide explosions. The skill builds Crossbow with Ice Crystal walls that hurt enemies when they break, and the whole build is tuned around making those crystals shatter all at once. Big area of effect plus overlapping blasts gives you the “screen shatter” effect that clears packs in one or two casts, while the crystals themselves block projectiles and slow melee enemies down.

Quick answer: Cast Glacial Bolt to drop Ice Crystal walls, then fire Fragmentation Rounds into them to detonate the crystals for cold area damage. Scale Area of Effect so the explosions overlap across the screen, and switch to a lightning-ailment single-target combo for bosses.

How the Glacial Bolt screen shatter combo works

Glacial Bolt is a Crossbow skill that creates walls of Ice Crystals. Those crystals deal damage when they are destroyed, which happens in two ways. Large enemies walking into them pop them, or you can break them on demand with Fragmentation Rounds. When a wall forms directly under an enemy, it shatters instantly, which is why this skill punches above its weight against bosses where many other cold Crossbow skills fall short.

The clearing rhythm is simple once it clicks. You alternate Glacial Bolt and Fragmentation Rounds. Glacial Bolt lays down crystals and freezes, and Fragmentation Rounds both clears those otherwise impassable walls and detonates anything frozen nearby. Scaling Area of Effect makes the blasts overlap, so a single combo can wipe a dense pack across the whole screen.

Tip: The crystals are a defensive tool, not just damage. They hold enemies back and stop incoming projectiles, which buys you time to reload Fragmentation Rounds and move safely through a zone or reposition against a tough rare.

Single target for bosses and T15 maps

Once you reach endgame bossing, T15 maps, and Atlas boss levels, Glacial Bolt alone may not push enough single target. The answer is Shockburst Rounds, which require the target to carry a lightning ailment before they do their full work. You apply that ailment with Plasma Blast plus Stormfire and Flame Wall, then unload Shockburst Rounds into the affected enemy.

For pure crystal bossing, the simplest line is to keep firing Glacial Bolt at a large target. The walls spawn under the boss and shatter immediately, so you often do not even need to swap to Fragmentation Rounds to end freezes. Scattershot fires three Glacial Bolts in quick succession, which stacks six ice walls back to back for a burst of explosions, and a faster reload means more bolts per cycle.

Leveling skills from Act 1 onward

Permafrost Bolts is the early-game stand-in for Glacial Bolt. It plays a similar role but leans on freezing enemies instead of crystal walls, and you can still pop frozen targets with Fragmentation Rounds. Use the same support setup you plan for Glacial Bolt, minus Scattershot, until Glacial Bolt comes online. For weaker or spread-out packs, Permafrost Bolts is faster because it freezes a couple of enemies that you then shatter.

Galvanic Shards covers a gap in the build. Glacial Bolt can struggle to hit very small enemies, and Galvanic Shards provides reliable area damage that handles those targets without the same problem. Herald of Ice and Herald of Thunder add automatic clear, and with enough extra area they chain across the screen and pile on cold damage.

Run Glacial Bolt at high Quality so you fire more shots before reloading. At 20% Quality or higher you can swap Nimble Reload for Ammo Conservation, which gives a chance to fire four or more times per reload. Below that, Nimble Reload is the more consistent choice and is mandatory for bossing.

SkillSupport gems
Glacial BoltScattershot, Cold Infusion, Magnified Effect, Primal Armament, Nimble Reload (or Ammo Conservation at 20%+ Quality)
Permafrost BoltsDouble Barrel, Heft, Primal Armament, Glaciation, Ice Bite
Fragmentation RoundsChain, Heft, Brutality, Nimble Reload, Culling Strike
Herald of IceLightning Infusion, Magnified Effect, Conduction, Longshot
Herald of ThunderCold Infusion, Glaciation, Longshot
Galvanic ShardsLightning Infusion, Martial Tempo, Ammo Conservation

Cold Infusion converts part of your damage to cold while reducing fire and lightning, which is one of the strongest gains for Glacial Bolt. Magnified Effect does little direct damage but makes the crystals overlap more reliably. On Fragmentation Rounds, use Heft for direct burst and Brutality for physical scaling, since Brutality does not interfere with the crystal explosions the way it can elsewhere.

Gear and stat priorities

Gearing this build well is demanding in early access, so aim for the stats below and fill in resistances and life as you go. The crossbow base matters most, since reload speed directly controls how many bolts you push out.

SlotPriority stats
CrossbowLow Reload Time base, % / added Physical Damage, Attack Speed. Elemental Damage, Crit, Accuracy, and Gem Levels are bonuses.
Weapon sockets% Physical Damage
Body armour and jewelryEvasion / Armour base, Evasion / Armour % or added, Life, Resistances to 75% cap, Attributes, Rarity
Armour socketsResistances to 75% cap (Chaos is good here), % Armour/Evasion, Life

If you take the Leather Bound Gauntlets node on the passive tree, use pure Armour gloves to match it. Treat sample item lists as starting points and follow these stat goals rather than copying specific bases.

Defenses, charms, and optional uniques

Survivability comes from layering Evasion and Armour with Sorcery Ward, which gives a large elemental damage barrier. Combine that with the Freeze you apply and the crystals blocking projectiles, and you stay well protected through most fights. Wind Dancer boosts your Evasion Rating, and at 20% Quality it unlocks a fourth stage for even more. Adding Blind to it reduces enemy accuracy when its effect drops off.

For charms, a Thawing Charm is the default pick because many dangerous enemies freeze you. If you have extra charm slots, consider an Amethyst Charm, Grounding Charm, or Golden Charm. As an optional unique, Cloak of Flame helps if you are dying to large physical boss abilities, giving you a meaningful cushion against those hits.

The Glacial Bolt core works on both Mercenary ascendancies. The Witchhunter leans on Sorcery Ward and evasion-armour layering, while the Gemling Legionnaire’s Gem Studded path lets it copy gem links more freely with the Solus Ipse helmet from the Arbiter of Ash. Either way, the loop stays the same. Lay crystals, shatter them, and let the overlapping explosions clear the screen while you save Shockburst Rounds for the bosses that need extra single target.
