Kratos was widely expected to appear only briefly in God of War Laufey, with Faye taking over as the playable lead. A new pre-order image changes that assumption. It shows Faye standing beside Kratos in a setting built from white-and-gold structures and yellow trees, an environment that reads more like Greek architecture than anything in the Norse realms.
Quick answer: Kratos is not the playable character in Laufey, but the new pre-order image showing Faye meeting him in a Greek-style setting suggests his involvement runs deeper than a short cameo.

What the new God of War Laufey screenshot shows
The image was released as part of the pre-order rollout, and it marks only the second time Kratos has been seen in Laufey. The first was during the game’s reveal at a State of Play. In the new shot, both Faye and Kratos look focused and ready for a fight, framed inside a bright location that resembles ancient Greece rather than the Nine Realms.
The Greek styling is what caught attention. Kratos began as the Greek God of War long before he ever set foot in the Norse saga, so a Greek-looking backdrop inside a story about the afterlife of the gods raises real questions about how his past connects to Faye’s journey.
There is a competing reading worth noting. When Kratos was in ancient Greece, he had not yet met Faye, so the pairing cannot be a literal memory of the two together. A more likely explanation is that the moment echoes the dream sequences from God of War Ragnarök, where Faye appeared to Kratos. In the Laufey reveal gameplay, Kratos briefly materialized in front of Faye before vanishing, and this scene may work the same way.

Why Kratos’s Exile Set pins down the timeline
Kratos wears the 2018 Exile Set in the image, and that outfit is the clearest timeline marker in the whole reveal. It places Laufey during the journey Kratos and Atreus take to scatter Faye’s ashes from the highest peak in the Nine Realms, the central quest of the 2018 God of War.
Laufey runs parallel to that story. Faye, Kratos’s second wife and a Giant from Jotunheim, wakes after her funeral in the Everywhen, the afterlife realm shared by gods from multiple mythologies. So while Kratos and Atreus travel across the Norse world, Faye fights to protect the plans she made for them before her death.
The Light of Alfheim and Everywhen theory
One theory ties the screenshot directly to a moment from the 2018 game. During the trip through Alfheim, Kratos enters the Light and hears Faye’s voice pulling him deeper in. Atreus has to drag him back out, and without that help, Kratos would have stayed trapped.
If the new image captures Kratos while he is inside the Light, it would mean he came close to crossing into the Everywhen itself. Because time flows differently inside the Light of Alfheim than it does outside, even a brief moment there could translate into a much larger sequence within Laufey’s afterlife. That would give Kratos a far bigger role than the quick cameo most players expected.
The Light of Alfheim connection remains fan interpretation. Santa Monica Studio has not confirmed how or why Kratos appears in this Greek-style location.

Kratos’s role in God of War Laufey
For the first time in a mainline God of War game, Kratos isn’t the playable lead. Faye takes center stage, accompanied in the Everywhen by Phranque, a cosmic cube, and Rue, a sword guardian. Christopher Judge is expected to return as Kratos, but none of the Laufey footage released so far has featured his voice.
Kratos’s time away from the spotlight may be brief: another God of War game led by him is confirmed to be in development, with a direct link to Laufey’s events. This casts Laufey as the connection between Ragnarök and Kratos’s next chapter, making a substantial appearance here more plausible than a token one.

The reveal video that first introduced Faye, the Everywhen, and Kratos’s brief appearance is below for reference.
For now, the new pre-order image is the strongest hint that Kratos matters more to Faye’s story than a passing glimpse. Whether that comes from the Light of Alfheim, a dream-like echo of Ragnarök, or a genuine crossing into the Everywhen will only be settled once the full game arrives.
