The Focus in the Troll Canyon is a Chapter 3 main quest in Gothic 1 Remake that sends you after one of the focus stones for the Water Mages. It pairs you with the Fire Mage Milten, who can craft a scroll that shrinks the adult troll guarding the area. Once the troll is down, you use Telekinesis to build a bridge to the stone itself.
Quick answer: Meet Milten at Troll Canyon, collect three troll skins from the main chamber, and hand them to him for a Shrink Monster scroll. Cast it on the adult troll to kill it, open the gate with the twin levers, grab the Telekinesis scroll from the chest, then use Telekinesis on the glowing crystal to form a bridge. Take the Focus Stone and return it to Saturas for 3,500 XP.
How to start The Focus in the Troll Canyon
This quest becomes available during The Focus Stones, the main quest Saturas gives you after you finish The Water Mages’ Plan. Before chasing any stone, visit the tower Diego marked on your map when he handed you The Water Mages’ Plan.
Talk to the NPCs at that tower to pin the focus stone locations on your map. The conversation also sends those NPCs to their positions, which is how Milten ends up waiting for you at the entrance to Troll Canyon. If your map is still blank, you will need to buy one from a vendor first.
Where to find Troll Canyon
Troll Canyon sits in the northern stretch of the Colony, northwest of the Old Camp. Cross the small bridge just north of the Old Camp and keep heading north through the forest. Continue past the cave entrance that leads to the Rogues’ Camp until you run into Milten outside the canyon.
The path is dangerous. Snappers along the way hit hard, so carry solid armor, a strong weapon, and enough healing items. If you arrive at night, equip a Light Spell or hold a torch so you can spot enemies and loot. Waiting until morning makes the whole trip easier.
Meet Milten and collect the troll skins
Speak to Milten, then follow him into the shelter on the right side of the canyon. He explains that he can prepare a scroll to shrink the adult troll, but he needs troll skins to do it. There is a mana-restoring potion on the shelf where he stops, so grab it if your mana is low. You need at least 5 mana to cast the Shrink Monster scroll later.
Note: Milten can be knocked out during fights, which lets you steal his items without penalty. Doing so leaves him fighting with only his fists for the rest of the quest, which is a real handicap on higher difficulties.
How to defeat the adult troll
Equip the Shrink Monster scroll to your hotbar, wait for the troll to move into range, and cast it. Once the troll shrinks, a few hits will finish it. The troll throws rocks and slams the ground, so keep moving and avoid those attacks while Milten helps.
You can also kill the troll at full size if you skipped the scroll. That fight is much harder, and the Dodge Roll skill helps because a normal dodge will not clear its swings. Learn Dodge Roll by training Acrobatics Level 1 with Buster at the New Camp, then roll backward whenever the troll swings or slams and poke it once between attacks.
After the troll falls, you can collect its skin as a trophy.
Open the gate and grab the Telekinesis scroll
The gate in the canyon has a lever on each side. Pull the right lever while Milten holds the left, and the gate rises. Head through the passageways until you reach a room with two exits. Take the exit straight ahead first to find a chest with the gear you need.

Take the Telekinesis scroll before backtracking. A second Telekinesis scroll also sits on a pedestal outside, in front of the Focus Stone, if you want a spare.

Turn in the Focus Stone and confirm the reward
Bring the Focus from Troll Canyon to Saturas, who you can find in the library or his room at the New Camp. Handing it over completes the quest and grants 3,500 XP. You can also hold onto the stone and gather the other focus stones first, then turn them all in together.
If you already sold the troll skins
Some players pick up and sell the troll skins before starting the quest, which leaves Milten unable to make the scroll. If that happened to you, return to the vendor who bought them and try to buy the skins back. If you cannot recall which vendor that was, you can reload a save from before the sale, or fight the adult troll at full size using the Dodge Roll approach above. No alternative source for the Shrink Monster scroll has been confirmed, so those three options are what you have to work with.
