Gothic 1 Remake: Completing The Price of Magic to Unlock Rune Magic

The Price of Magic is the short Old Camp quest that turns the Nameless Hero into a novice of Rune Magic in Gothic 1 Remake. You hand the Fire Mage Torrez a blank scroll and a pair of wolf claws, spend a few Learning Points, and walk away able to cast a permanent spell. It is one of the cleanest early upgrades in the game because it gives you ranged damage before melee feels safe.

Quick answer: Talk to Torrez near the well in the southern market of the Old Camp, bring him 1 Parchment (bought from Graham at the north gate) and 2 Wolf's Claws (bought from Mordrag near the south gate), then spend 5 Learning Points with him to learn Rune Magic and pick your first rune.

The Price of Magic requirements in Gothic 1 Remake

Before you start, make sure you have enough ore to buy the materials and at least 5 Learning Points saved for the training. The quest is purely a fetch task, so the only real cost is ore and a short walk across the Old Camp.

RequirementWhere to get it
1 Parchment (blank scroll)Buy from Graham near the Old Camp north gate.
2 Wolf's Claws (dewclaws)Buy from Mordrag near the south gate, or loot them from wolves.
5 Learning PointsEarned by leveling up, then spent with Torrez.

Note: Vendor prices can vary a little between play sessions. Plan on roughly 13 to 16 ore for the Parchment and around 14 to 16 ore for both Wolf's Claws, so carrying about 30 ore covers the run with room to spare.

Step 1: Speak to Torrez in the Old Camp

Step 1: Head to the southern market area of the Old Camp, past the Chapel, and look for the well surrounded by the cloth-covered stalls. Torrez stands nearby during the day, close to traders like Fisk, Dexter, and Mordrag.

Step 2: Talk to him about the letter for the Fire Mages and express interest in Rune Magic. After the conversation, he offers to make you a magician and asks for a blank scroll and two wolf claws.

Step 2: Buy the Parchment from Graham

Step 1: Walk to the north gate of the Old Camp, where Graham the mapmaker keeps his shack. He is the same trader who sells the world map, so he is easy to find around the gate and the nearby cooking area.

Step 2: Ask to see his goods and buy the Parchment. This is the blank scroll Torrez needs, and there is no fight involved.

Step 3: Get two Wolf's Claws from Mordrag

Step 1: Go to the south gate and look for Mordrag, who sits carving a piece of wood near a hut during the day. He sells the two Wolf's Claws you need, which keeps the quest safe and quick.

Step 2: If you would rather save ore, you can kill wolves and loot the claws yourself, or lure a wolf toward the bridge guards outside the north gate and let them finish it. Wolves hit hard before you have armor, so buying is the lower-risk option for new characters.

Step 4: Return to Torrez and choose a rune

Step 1: Go back to Torrez at the well and hand over the Parchment and both Wolf's Claws. Confirm you have 5 Learning Points first, since the training cannot finish without them.

Step 2: Ask to learn Rune Magic. Torrez explains that casting drains mana, then lets you pick your first permanent rune between Firebolt and Healing.

Firebolt is the stronger first pick for most runs. It fires a fire projectile that deals 35 fire damage and lets you hurt enemies before they reach melee range, which matters a lot in the punishing early hours. Healing regenerates life, but eating food already covers basic recovery, so the offensive option solves more problems. You can buy the other rune from Torrez later anyway, and the Healing rune tends to cost noticeably more ore than the Firebolt rune.

How to confirm The Price of Magic is complete

The quest closes the moment Torrez teaches you Rune Magic and you select your first rune. You will see the quest update to complete, and the chosen rune appears in your inventory ready to cast as long as you have mana. Torrez also opens his shop after this, letting you buy more runes and magic items from him.

If the training does not go through, the usual cause is missing 5 Learning Points, or not having all three materials in your inventory at once. Make sure you are carrying the Parchment plus both Wolf's Claws and have the points saved, then talk to Torrez again.

Once Firebolt is unlocked, treat mana as a limited resource and open dangerous fights from range rather than firing at everything. Resting and certain swamp weed consumables can restore mana early, though some carry a temporary Dexterity penalty worth avoiding if you plan to use a bow or sneak. Used carefully, the rune makes wolves, scavengers, and other early threats far less likely to end your run.
