In Graveyard Keeper 2, the twins on the opposite riverbank have the merchant’s fishing rod. They accept only pottery in exchange, but the request never tells you how to obtain it. Clay Plates require an unlocked technology, a workstation you must construct, and clay that you must excavate.
Quick answer: Unlock Pottery I with 10 Red and 5 Green Tech Points, then construct a Potter’s Wheel using 1 Piece of Stone plus 2 Wooden Planks. Dig up 4 Clay, and use the recipe twice to produce 6 Clay Plates.
Clay Plate requirements in Graveyard Keeper 2
Every part of this chain depends on the one before it, so it pays to line up all four requirements before you start walking back and forth between your yard and the clay pit.
| Requirement | Cost or detail |
|---|---|
| Pottery I technology | 10 Red Tech Points, 5 Green Tech Points |
| Potter’s Wheel | 2 Wooden Planks, 1 Piece of Stone |
| Clay | 4 total for the full order of six plates |
| Tools | Axe, pickaxe, and a shovel for digging |
Clay excavation falls under Building and requires Building mastery 2. Since your starting rusty axe and pickaxe provide that level, a new save meets the requirement immediately.

Neither the Clay Plate recipe nor the Potter’s Wheel blueprint exists until you buy the technology. Red and Green Tech Points accumulate as you perform actions tied to those two fields, so if you are short, keep working around the base and come back.

Build the Potter’s Wheel in your yard
The wheel itself is cheap on paper, but neither of its two materials is something you pick up off the ground. Both come out of short production chains you may not have set up yet.
| Material | Made at | Recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Board | Sawhorse | Logs from chopped trees |
| Wooden Plank | Woodworking Workbench I | 1 Board per plank |
| Wood Wedge | Chopping Spot | Short Logs |
| Piece of Stone | Stonemason’s Workbench | 2 Stone + 4 Wood Wedges = 4 pieces |
Logs come from chopping trees with the axe, and Stone comes from boulders with the pickaxe. Clearing the trees and rocks nearest your yard does two jobs at once, since it gives you the raw materials and opens up building slots for the wheel.
Both the Woodworking Workbench I and the Stonemason’s Workbench need Bronze Nails, one of the fiddlier early materials to source. Get those in hand before you commit to the chain.
With two planks and one Piece of Stone in your inventory, open the crafting board in the yard, pick Potter’s Wheel from the craft tab, and drop it into any free slot nearby. The Stonemason’s recipe produces four pieces at once, so the leftovers carry over to other early builds.
Where to dig Clay in Graveyard Keeper 2
Head southeast from your home, past the small ruins, and into the Inquisition Base. There is a large open clay pit in the ground before the cliffside, easy to spot once you are looking for a sinkhole rather than a rock node. Clay also turns up around the Riverside area if you happen to be over there.

Digging drains energy, and working through a low bar builds fatigue. Carry food if you plan to stockpile clay for bricks or urns in the same trip.
Craft six Clay Plates at the Potter’s Wheel
Carry the clay back north to your yard and stand at the Potter’s Wheel. This is the only station that produces plates, and the recipe needs Building mastery 2 to run.

Deliver the plates and confirm the quest completed
Cross the river again and talk to the twins at the same spot where they first asked for pottery. Handing over the six plates closes this stage of the quest and they give you the fishing rod on the spot, with no coins or extra items to pay. Once the rod is in your inventory, the exchange is done and fishing opens up, along with any objectives that need fish.
If the Clay Plate recipe is missing
Receiving the twins’ request does not unlock anything on its own, and going back to talk to them repeatedly will not push the quest along. If you cannot see Clay Plates anywhere, check these two things.
- Open the Tech Trees menu and confirm Pottery I is genuinely purchased, not just visible in the Building branch.
- Make sure you are opening the Potter’s Wheel and not another workbench, since no other station carries the recipe.
With the technology bought and the wheel standing in your yard, nothing else gates the plates. Four clay from the pit southeast of home covers the entire order, and the whole detour takes a couple of in-game trips once the woodworking and stonemason benches are running.
