GTA 5 Free Upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for Last-Gen Owners

Last-gen GTA 5 owners can move to the current-gen edition at no cost, keeping their Story Mode and Online progress.

Last-gen GTA 5 owners can move to the current-gen edition at no cost, keeping their Story Mode and Online progress.

Rockstar has opened a no-cost path from the old console versions of Grand Theft Auto V to the current-gen edition. Owners on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can now move up to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version without buying it again, and their save data comes along for the ride. The offer arrives just ahead of a major Grand Theft Auto Online update and the wider buildup to Grand Theft Auto 6.

Quick answer: If you own any PS4 copy or the digital Xbox One copy of GTA V, open the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S store listing for the game on the same account and download the current-gen version at no charge starting June 18, 2026. It works when the game appears in your library priced at $0 and your existing progress transfers.

Who qualifies for the free GTA 5 current-gen upgrade

Eligibility depends on the exact version you already own. The free upgrade covers any PS4 copy and the digital Xbox One copy. From there you move to the matching current-gen build on the same platform family.

Version you ownFree upgrade target
Any PS4 copy (physical or digital)PS5 version
Digital Xbox One copyXbox Series X|S version
PC Legacy versionPC Enhanced version

Note: On Xbox, only the digital Xbox One copy is named for the free move, so a disc-based Xbox One copy is not part of this offer. The current-gen edition normally costs $39.99 / £39.99 / €39.99, so qualifying owners avoid that price.

How to claim the upgrade

Sign in to the same account that owns your eligible PS4 or Xbox One copy. The upgrade is tied to ownership, so the store must recognize your previous purchase.
Open the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S store listing for Grand Theft Auto V. The current-gen edition should show at no cost for your account.
Download and install the current-gen version, then launch it. Your Story Mode and GTA Online progress can be migrated, so you keep your characters, properties, and vehicles.

The same approach applies on PC, where the move from the Legacy version to the Enhanced version is also free. Full details of the rollout are laid out in Rockstar’s official announcement.

What the current-gen version adds

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S build is the Enhanced edition, and it pushes the technical side well past the older consoles. You get higher resolution, smoother frame rates, and a denser world, plus content that was previously locked to newer hardware.

AreaWhat changes on current-gen
Resolution and frame rate4K resolution at 60 FPS
LightingRay tracing support
LoadingFaster load times
World detailImproved draw distances, more pedestrians and traffic
AudioImproved audio quality
Online contentHao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles and upgrades, Career Progress rewards

On PC, the Enhanced version adds ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination that the console versions do not match. Across all platforms, the jump over the last-gen release is not enormous, but it delivers a cleaner, smoother run through Los Santos.

How to confirm your progress carried over

You know the upgrade worked when the current-gen edition installs at no charge and launches with your existing data intact. Load Story Mode to check your single-player save, then open GTA Online to confirm your character, money, properties, and vehicles are present. Migration covers both modes, so a fresh, empty account on the new version usually means you launched a new save rather than migrating the old one.

Why the timing matters for GTA Online and GTA 6

The free upgrade lands right before The Kortz Center Heist, GTA Online’s next major update due in July. That heist sends players into a Los Santos art gallery across a multi-stage job, with new properties such as the Art Studio mansion add-on and a Fine Art Collector Program tied to exclusive rewards.

Rockstar is also running a limited-time 40% bonus on GTA$ for all Shark Cards, plus a GTA$2,000,000 discount on luxury properties for GTA+ members. The move reads as a final push for GTA Online, getting lapsed players onto the best version of the game before Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives later in the year. With the heist on the way and a new generation of players able to jump in for free, the road to the next chapter starts with the strongest version of Los Santos yet.
