A full breakdown of the guns, melee, throwables, and gear shown across official GTA 6 reveals, plus how the new carry limits work.

A full breakdown of the guns, melee, throwables, and gear shown across official GTA 6 reveals, plus how the new carry limits work.

Grand Theft Auto VI arms Jason and Lucia with a wide spread of firearms, melee tools, and tactical gear, and the way you carry it all has changed. Instead of an endless pocket arsenal, the game leans toward a Red Dead Redemption 2 style of inventory, with a strict carry limit and a redesigned weapon wheel. Below is every weapon shown in official trailers, screenshots, and leaked footage, sorted by category, along with the equipment, ammo types, and rules that shape combat.

Quick answer: You can carry two rifles and two pistols at once. Everything else lives in your vehicle trunk. Confirmed weapon categories include handguns, shotguns, SMGs and machine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, heavy weapons, thrown weapons, and melee, plus a deep set of utility gear on its own wheel.

GTA 6 carry limits and weapon wheel rules

The weapon wheel has been rebuilt and now works much like the one in Red Dead Redemption 2. You press R1 or RB to switch between three groups: Weapons, Equipment, and Gear. This keeps your guns separate from your tools, so you are not scrolling past a lock pick to find a rifle.

The carry cap is the biggest shift from GTA 5. You hold a maximum of two rifles and two pistols on your person. Any extra firearms get stored in vehicle trunks, which means you pick a loadout before a job instead of bringing everything. A few more rules round this out.

  • Dual wielding does not return from Red Dead Redemption 2. You use one weapon at a time.
  • You can drop unwanted weapons, and there are dedicated animations for picking weapons back up.
  • You can switch hands while carrying or firing, so you can shoot left-handed around cover.
  • Some items are marked as “Shared,” pointing to a possible shared inventory between Jason and Lucia.
  • NPCs react to a drawn weapon, and the protagonist auto-holsters in busy public areas.

Combat features and how you get weapons

Several combat changes go beyond the gun list. You can fire while swimming, lean out of car windows, and stand up in a truck bed to shoot long guns during drive-bys. An “underfire” animation shows the character shielding against gunfire, and the animation adapts to the weapon you hold. There is also an “overdose” state tied to certain items.

Getting your hands on weapons works through familiar GTA routes. Basic guns and melee tools can be found around the map for free pickup. Most firearms are bought at Ammu-Nation shops, and certain weapons unlock as you finish story missions. Weapon customization returns as well, with magazines, attachments, optics, tints, liveries, and special rounds. First-person and third-person modes are both supported, with full first-person reloading and shooting animations.

More than 30 individual weapons have been shown so far across official material, and that count is expected to grow as new footage drops ahead of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launch. With a tight carry limit and dedicated gear slots, the choice of what to bring now matters as much as the firepower itself.
