Honkai: Star Rail 4.2 Apocalyptic Shadow - Best Teams for Idol of the Locusts

The version 4.2 Apocalyptic Shadow rotation, titled Idol of the Locusts, leans hard into the Elation theme that defines the patch. The main buff increases Elation DMG taken by all enemies by 25% and Weakness Break DMG by 15%, and breaking an enemy with the Steadfast Safeguard trait dispels control debuffs and immediately activates allies' Ultimates. That single mechanic decides which teams thrive here.

Quick answer: Break-focused teams (Firefly, Rappa, Boothill) and Elation-aligned damage cores benefit most. Pair them with Ruan Mei or Harmony Trailblazer, and lean into Fire, Ice, Imaginary, or Physical DPS to cover both nodes' weakness pools.

Idol of the Locusts rotation window

The current Apocalyptic Shadow phase runs from April 27, 2026, 04:00 (server time) through June 8, 2026, 03:59 (server time). The Elation DMG and Weakness Break DMG bonuses apply to every node, so teams that already deal one or both of those damage types stack the buffs naturally.

Breaking an enemy with Steadfast Safeguard cleanses crowd control and instantly activates allies' Ultimates. That turns Break-heavy compositions into self-fueling cycles: every break opens an Ultimate window, and every Ultimate accelerates the next break.

What to optimize for

Three traits matter on this rotation, in roughly this order:

  • Break Effect / Weakness Break access: The 15% Break DMG amplifier and the auto-Ultimate trigger reward teams that can reliably break shields.
  • Elation alignment: The 25% Elation DMG amp benefits Elation Path units and characters synergizing with Punchline mechanics.
  • Element coverage: Match each node's weakness list, since off-element damage scales poorly even with the buffs.

Best DPS picks

DPSElementWhy it works
FireflyFireSuper Break specialist who triggers the Weakness Break amp on cooldown; covers Fire-weak nodes.
RappaImaginaryAoE Break with strong Toughness damage; Imaginary covers both common weakness pools.
BoothillPhysicalSingle-target Break DPS that hits hard against Physical-weak bosses.
AcheronLightningElation-adjacent burst damage benefits from the 25% DMG amp; pair with Nihility supports.
Kafka / Black SwanLightning / WindDoT core that performs well on Lightning-weak nodes and benefits when Whirlwind-style buffs are offered.
FeixiaoWindFollow-up DPS that thrives when buffs reward Ultimate or Follow-Up DMG.
The Herta / JadeIce / QuantumErudition AoE that clears Ice-weak waves quickly when Erudition-tagged buffs appear.

Break Effect (Firefly): Firefly, Harmony Trailblazer (Imaginary), Ruan Mei, Lingsha, or Gallagher. The Imaginary Trailblazer plus Ruan Mei extends Weakness Break, and Lingsha doubles as a Break-effect sustain. This team eats the Steadfast Safeguard trigger for breakfast.

Break Effect (Rappa): Rappa, Harmony Trailblazer (Imaginary), Ruan Mei, Lingsha. Identical support shell as Firefly, but Rappa's AoE clears multi-target nodes faster.

Boothill Break: Boothill, Bronya, or Harmony Trailblazer, Ruan Mei, Aventurine, or Gallagher. Bronya's turn advance plus Boothill's Pocket Trickshot keeps Toughness pressure constant.

Acheron hypercarry: Acheron, Jiaoqiu, Pela or Cipher, Aventurine. Two Nihility units fuel Acheron's Ultimate stacks, and the 25% Elation DMG amp lifts her burst windows.

DoT core: Kafka, Black Swan, Ruan Mei, Aventurine or Huohuo. Strong on nodes that include Lightning or Wind weaknesses, especially when DoT-friendly node buffs are offered.

Follow-Up: Feixiao, Topaz, Robin, Aventurine. Built around Ultimate and Follow-Up burst windows, which the rotation's Ultimate-activation mechanic reinforces.

Sustain options

Pick the sustain that aligns with your DPS. Lingsha is the default for Break and Super Break teams because she contributes Toughness damage and Break Effect. Aventurine is the standard for Follow-Up and Acheron compositions. Huohuo fits Elation and DoT teams, especially anything that wants more energy cycling. Gallagher remains a budget Break-friendly pick.

Reading the node buffs

Each node offers a choice of Finality's Axiom buffs, and picking the right one matters more than usual on this rotation. A few patterns to watch for:

  • Buffs that reward Memosprite presence (for example, "Past Life: Shadowed Reverie") favor teams stacking summon units like Aglaea, Jade, or Lingsha.
  • Buffs that boost Erudition RES PEN favor The Herta, Jade, Himeko, or Argenti-style AoE teams.
  • Buffs tied to Ultimate or Follow-Up DMG push Feixiao, Topaz, and Acheron compositions ahead.
  • Buffs that scale with SP consumption reward skill-hungry hypercarries; avoid them on Firefly or Boothill turbo-break teams.
  • Buffs that grant SPD after a break ("Whirlwind Turn"-style) compound with DoT and Break teams that want extra turns.

Pick the buff that compounds with your team's existing strength rather than the highest raw number. A 60% DMG buff that requires three Memosprites is worthless if you only field one.

Practical clear checklist

Step 1: Check each node's weakness list before locking your roster. Bring at least one DPS or breaker that matches a primary weakness on each side.

Step 2: Build for Toughness damage on at least one team. The auto-Ultimate trigger only fires when you actually break Steadfast Safeguard, so a team with no break path will leave free damage on the table.

Step 3: Pick node buffs that match your team's identity (Break, Follow-Up, DoT, or Memosprite). Mismatched buffs waste a node slot.

Step 4: Aim for the 6,600-point star threshold by pairing your strongest team with the harder node and using your second-best team to mop up the easier side within the cycle limit.

Treat the Elation DMG and Break DMG amps as a hint about what HoYoverse expects you to bring. Break teams and burst-window DPS clear the fastest, but any well-tuned hypercarry that matches the weakness chart and picks the right Finality's Axiom buff can hit the maximum point threshold without much trouble.
