How to Unlock and Build the Millstone in Windrose

The Millstone is a critical crafting station in Windrose that opens up an entire tier of processing recipes, most notably Gunpowder for your firearms. You can't build one until you've pushed into the Foothills biome and completed a specific chain of main quests, so many players hit a wall, wondering why the recipe never appears. Here's exactly how the unlock works and what you can do once the Millstone is up and running.

Quick answer: Travel to the Foothills, pick up Corn from one of the islands there, and the Millstone Parts recipe will automatically unlock at your Workbench. Craft Millstone Parts for 15 Stone, then place the Millstone in Build Mode using 1 Millstone Parts + 15 Wood.

Quest prerequisites before you can reach the Foothills

The Millstone recipe is gated behind story progression. You won't have access to the Foothills — or the resources found there — until you've cleared several main quests and defeated the first boss. The chain looks like this:

Step 1: Complete the main quests Rescuing the Crew and I Need a Bigger Boat. These quests walk you through early-game survival, base building, and your first ship upgrade.

Step 2: Kill Thomas Richards and finish the quest Revenge is Best Served Cold. Defeating this boss unlocks the Discover page for the Foothills biome and a large batch of new resource types, including Foothills Iron Ore.

Step 3: Sail to the Foothills. Once you arrive, explore the islands until you find Corn growing naturally. Simply picking it up triggers the unlock for Millstone Parts at your Workbench.

Corn is the specific discovery item that gates the Millstone. If you've reached the Foothills but don't see the Millstone Parts recipe, keep exploring different islands until you locate and collect Corn.

Crafting and placing the Millstone

Once Corn has been discovered, the crafting process is straightforward but involves two separate steps — one at the Workbench and one in Build Mode.

You may also need the Sawhorse workbench upgrade available by this point in your progression. Make sure your Workbench is fully upgraded for Tier 2 crafting before attempting to build the Millstone Parts.

What the Millstone can craft

The Millstone is a grinding station. You load raw materials in and get processed goods out. Four recipes are available at the Millstone:

OutputInputNotes
Gunpowder10 Sulfur + 20 AshRequired for all firearms alongside bullets
Ash (from Charcoal)2 CharcoalProduces 6 Ash; less efficient than Charcoal Kiln byproduct
CornmealCornUsed in food recipes
Bone MealBonesUsed in various crafting recipes

Gunpowder is by far the most important product here. Without it, your Pistols and Blunderbusses won't fire even if you have a full stack of Stone Bullets loaded. Gunpowder fills the dedicated Ammo slot in your inventory alongside your bullet type.

⚠️
You need an Iron Pickaxe to mine Sulfur deposits. Smelting Foothills Iron Ore into ingots also requires completing Revenge is Best Served Cold first, so don't expect to craft Gunpowder the moment you arrive in the Foothills.

Where to find Sulfur and Ash

Sulfur deposits appear in both the Coastal Jungle and Foothills biomes, but you can only mine them once you have an Iron Pickaxe. The deposits come in two visual forms — one resembles ordinary stone with subtle yellow marbling that's easy to walk past, while the other is a clumpy, gravel-like boulder covered in obvious yellow coloring. Get close and inspect any suspicious rocks if you're having trouble spotting them.

Ash is much simpler to stockpile. Every time you burn Wood in the Charcoal Kiln to produce Charcoal, Ash drops as a byproduct. You likely already have a healthy supply sitting in storage. The Millstone can also convert 2 Charcoal into 6 Ash, but this is generally wasteful since Charcoal is needed for smelting ingots. Stick to the Kiln byproduct method whenever possible.

Alternative ways to get Gunpowder without the Millstone

If you need Gunpowder before your Millstone is operational, a few loot sources exist, though none are reliable enough to replace crafting long-term:

SourceDetails
Cave and ruin chestsFound across all three islands; Gunpowder drop rate is low
Blackbeard's Pirate CampsChests and sacks inside camps during the Rescuing Your Crew quest
Enemy piratesSailors and higher-level human enemies sometimes drop Gunpowder on death

These sources can tide you over during the early Foothills transition, but building a Millstone and farming Sulfur is the only sustainable path to keeping your guns loaded.

Using Gunpowder with firearms

Windrose treats Gunpowder as a separate ammo component. You need both bullets (like Stone Bullets) and Gunpowder equipped to fire any gun. When you pick up or craft Gunpowder, it automatically slots into the Ammo section of your inventory next to your bullet stack. Turning on auto-refill in your inventory settings makes reloading during combat significantly smoother — without it, you'll need to manually manage both ammo types mid-fight.

The Millstone sits at a pivotal point in Windrose's progression curve. It marks your transition from melee-only combat into ranged firepower, and it unlocks food processing recipes that become important as you push deeper into harder content. Prioritize finding Corn as soon as you reach the Foothills, get your Iron Pickaxe forged, and start stockpiling Sulfur early. Your pistol will thank you.
