The Apple community forums are receiving complaints from iPhone XS and XS Max users about the Volume buttons not working on their new iPhone. Most of the affected users have a problem with the Volume Down button, but some are reporting issues with the Volume Up button as well.

An issue with the volume buttons might sound like a hardware problem, but it’s not in case of the iPhone XS and XS Max. Apparently, if you adjust the volume using the touchscreen on your XS, the volume buttons start working again. Which tells us it’s a software issue, not hardware.

How to fix iPhone XS volume buttons not working issue

  1. Swipe down from the top-right edge of the display to open Control Center.
  2. Slide your finger over the volume slider to adjust volume using touch.
  3. Now press the Volume button that wasn’t working before. It should be fixed.

This page is for devices which are affected by a buggy software problem with the volume buttons on iPhone XS and XS Max. But it may be possible that your volume buttons are actually broke, and in that case, you should have your device checked at an authorized Apple service center.
