Every pre-modern sorcerer from Dhruv to Sukuna, sorted by raw power and technique into clear tiers.

Long before Yuji Itadori swallowed a cursed finger, the jujutsu world was full of sorcerers whose strength dwarfed anything the modern era usually produces. Most of them surfaced during the Culling Game, reincarnated into new bodies to fight again, while others shaped the entire story from the shadows. Here is how the strongest of these ancient figures stack up against one another.

Quick answer: Ryomen Sukuna sits at the very top as the strongest sorcerer in history, with Kenjaku a clear second thanks to his stockpile of stolen techniques.

Ancient sorcerer tier list

These nine are split into tiers by overall combat power, not just how strong a single technique is. A character can hold a devastating ability and still land lower if the rest of their kit is limited.

S tier: The apex sorcerers

Sukuna stands alone above everyone else. Born in the Heian Era, he clawed his way to the top of a world packed with vicious curses and elite sorcerers, becoming the most powerful user of cursed energy ever born. People treated him as a god or feared him as a walking disaster. In his whole life only Satoru Gojo ever truly matched him, and Sukuna still killed the strongest sorcerer of the modern age, which locks in his place as the strongest of all time. His Malevolent Shrine domain and Cleave and Dismantle slashes cut through almost anything.

Kenjaku is the mastermind behind the entire series and is implied to be even older than Sukuna, given the deal he struck with Dhruv. His innate Brain Transplant lets him move his brain into other bodies and take full control of them, which also hands him access to their cursed techniques. By the time of the story he can wield several techniques at once, and paired with his Open Domain, that flexibility makes him one of the most dangerous fighters in the franchise.

A tier: Elite heavy hitters

Uraume served as Sukuna’s cook and only real companion in the Heian Era, but that role hides a Special Grade powerhouse. Their Ice Manipulation turns cursed energy into massive, durable ice formations big enough to trap powerful sorcerers or rise to the size of mountains. Combined with high cursed energy reserves and command of Reverse Cursed Technique, Uraume ranks among the strongest sorcerers in history.

Hajime Kashimo was the strongest of the Edo Period. For most of his appearances he fought purely with mastery over his own lightning-like cursed energy, which carried a sure-hit property even without a domain. His one-time-use Mythical Beast Amber technique let him overwhelm Sukuna’s vessel form and forced the King of Curses to awaken his True Form to put him down.

Yorozu was one of the Heian Era’s greatest sorcerers. The same Construction technique that was useless in Mai Zenin’s hands becomes terrifying with Yorozu’s enormous cursed energy, letting her build complex shapes, armor, and objects to fight Sukuna on close-to-even terms. Her ultimate attack, the True Sphere, has a perfect shape and infinite density that can crush whatever it touches.

B tier: Culling Game standouts

Ryu Ishigori holds the greatest cursed energy output in the entire history of the series, even higher than Sukuna and Gojo. As one of the strongest sorcerers of the Edo Period, his technique simply releases that immense energy in a massive wave that flattens anything in its path. He was part of the three-way Sendai Deadlock and put up the best fight of that trio against Yuta.

Takako Uro rose to prominence during the Heian Era, the golden age of sorcery, as part of the elite assassin group known as the Sun, Moon, and Stars Clan. Her Sky Manipulation is versatile and powerful enough to hold her own in the Sendai Deadlock and fight well against Yuta, who later stole the technique for his own arsenal.

C tier: One trick and one legend

Angel owns the single most powerful cursed technique in the series, Technique Extinguishment, which fully nullifies whatever ability is used against it. Through Jacob’s Ladder, even Gojo’s Infinity would be rendered useless. The catch is that outside of this technique she is not especially strong, and her cursed energy control is unremarkable, so the technique alone is what earns her a spot.

Dhruv Lakdawalla is the oldest known sorcerer in the series, active close to 2,000 years before the main story, and he once controlled all of Japan during the Civil War of Wa. He was in his second reincarnation during the Culling Game and made real waves through the Sendai Colony Deadlock. Even so, Yuta killed him with little effort, which is why he closes out the ranking despite his history.

How this ranking was decided

Placement weighs total combat performance across the manga, not a single flashy ability. That means cursed energy output, technique versatility, domain access, and head-to-head showings against fighters like Yuta and Sukuna all factor in. It is why Angel, who holds the strongest technique on paper, still sits near the bottom, while Sukuna clears the field on feats alone.

This ranking reflects the completed manga through the end of the Culling Game and the final battle with Sukuna. Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
