Kyoto is where Onimusha: Way of the Sword stops being a corridor and starts asking you to sweep. Four quest chains run through the district, they overlap in geography, and most of the region’s materials sit in stalls, jars, and side chests that are easy to walk past. Doing it in a sensible order saves you a second lap.
Quick answer: Run Kyoto in the order The Light of Vengeance → The Roots of All Evil → The Odd Couples → The Faceless, unlocking the Kamo River – East, Kiyomizu-zaka Slope, Kiyomizu-dera Temple – The Approach, Higashioji Street, and Shijo Street Spirit Mirrors as you pass them. Buy Oni Vision: Treasures before the cleanup lap so chests light up instead of hiding.
Kyoto quest order and what each one pays out
The four Kyoto chains chain into each other. Finishing one usually drops you within walking distance of the next trigger, so there is no reason to jump between them.
| Quest | Opening objective | Key items along the way |
|---|---|---|
| The Light of Vengeance | Speak with the anxious boy | Malice x2, Malice Mass x1, Whetstone x2, Tempered Iron x1, Tamahagane x1 on completion |
| The Roots of All Evil | Speak with Takamura | Hempen Cloth x1 from a house chest, plus Fine Silk Cloth and Oni Stones |
| The Odd Couples | Starts at the Higashioji Street stalls | Old Drawing No. 3, Prayer Beads x1, Leather x1, Greater Might Talisman x1 |
| The Faceless | Head for the house inhabited by the Faceless | Greater Defense Talisman x1, Skeleton Honoki x1, Horn Token (Blazing) x1, Oni Cloth (Resistance) x1 |
Several of these also register as Mysteries of Kyoto, which live in the Curious Cases menu as Observations and show up on the map as a butterfly marker. They do not appear at all until you finish the mission “What Lurks in the Shadows,” and The Faceless specifically only becomes available after “Okuni’s Kabuki Dance.” Finding all eight Mysteries unlocks the Demystified trophy.

Add to Google Preferences →Spirit Mirrors to unlock across the Kyoto route
Spirit Mirrors are your save points and fast travel anchors, and the Kyoto loop is built around five of them. Touch each one the moment you see it, even if you are mid-fight cleanup, because the route doubles back constantly.
| Spirit Mirror | What it puts you next to |
|---|---|
| Kamo River – East | Bow encounters, Prayer Beads, Honoki patches, civilians under attack |
| Kiyomizu-zaka Slope | Ore Stone chest, the bamboo forest, the scent trail for the boy’s father |
| Kiyomizu-dera Temple – The Approach | Deep forest Kogashira fights, the wooden gate, the Malice Barrier |
| Higashioji Street | Sake and millet stalls, the start of The Odd Couples |
| Shijo Street | Hidden Treasure No. 3 and the Byakue arena |
Note: Spirit Mirror unlock progress does not carry into New Game+, so a second run means re-lighting all of them.
Oni Power abilities the Kyoto route depends on
Two Oni Power uses gate progress here rather than just helping. The spirit fox transformation reveals hidden paths and lets you follow scent trails, and it is the only way to track the missing father or slip past certain blocked routes. Red Malice Barriers, meanwhile, need a charged Oni Power gauge to break — if the barrier ignores you, you simply do not have enough energy banked yet.
For collectibles, hold your Oni Vision inputs and pulse them constantly. Three Special Skills — Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2, and Oni Vision: Search Range — turn the material hunt from guesswork into a scan, so it is worth saving Oni Stones for them before spending on anything else. Holding L2/LT and repeatedly tapping R2/RT while you walk is the habit that catches the stragglers.
The Light of Vengeance: full route and pickups

The Roots of All Evil and the Higashioji Street stalls

The Odd Couples starts here as soon as you reach the stalls, so both chains run in parallel from this point on.
Old Drawing No. 3 and the Hidden Treasure No. 3 location
Hidden treasures work off drawings. A chest near the Higashioji Street stalls contains Old Drawing No. 3 x1 alongside Prayer Beads x1 and Leather x1, and that drawing is what points you at the dig site. Read it, then match the sketch to the real location.
Hidden Treasure No. 3 sits near Shijo Street. Unlock the Shijo Street Spirit Mirror while you are there, and grab the Greater Might Talisman x1 on the way through. The hidden chest in this pocket of the district holds Five Silk Cloth x1, Power Stone x1, Soul Sacker x1, and Leather x2 — one of the denser single pickups in the region.
Byakue – Hundred Defilements and the loot around the arena
Byakue – Hundred Defilements is the Kyoto boss, and clearing it hands you Horn Token (Reflex) x1 plus assorted materials. Do not fast travel away the second it dies, because the surrounding area is stacked.
Climb the scaffolding beside the arena for Persimmon x1 and Leather x2, then collect Oni Cloth (Awakening) x1 from the glowing spot nearby. A group of Genma waits inside the adjacent building; clearing them triggers The Faceless and opens up the last cluster of pickups — Greater Defense Talisman x1, Skeleton Honoki x1, Horn Token (Blazing) x1, and Oni Cloth (Resistance) x1.
How to confirm a Kyoto objective registered
Every meaningful step in Kyoto announces itself. A “Curious Cases Updated” banner means a Mystery or Observation has been logged, and it fires on things like reaching the Leaning Pagoda of Kyoto or completing a quest leg. Quest completion shows the reward list on screen, and a “Ready to Enhance” prompt appears once you have enough materials to spend.
If something is not triggering, the reasons are narrow. Mysteries of Kyoto do not exist in your log before “What Lurks in the Shadows” is done. The Faceless is locked behind “Okuni’s Kabuki Dance.” And a red Malice Barrier that will not break is an Oni Power problem, not a positioning one — fight something and come back.
Kyoto cleanup and what survives New Game+
Nothing in Kyoto is permanently missable. Free roam stays open right up to the Point of No Return before the final mission “The Clash At Rendaino,” and keeping a manual save at that prompt lets you return and finish the sweep. After the credits, choosing Continue from the main menu also drops you back before that mission.
That matters because full completion covers 274 collectible locations across the game, and a second playthrough is mandatory anyway — Carnage difficulty only unlocks after your first clear. If you plan to redo Kyoto in New Game+, know what resets.
| Carries into New Game+ | Resets in New Game+ |
|---|---|
| Awakened Oni Abilities | Mysteries of Kyoto |
| Enhanced basic and special Skills | Chance Encounters |
| Hozuki Pouches and Pouch Enhancements | Clothing |
| Items, Charms and Charm Enhancements | Sword and Gauntlet Enhancements |
| Genma Notes and Lion Dogs | Red Souls and Spirit Mirror progress |
Because Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters wipe, the Kyoto quest chains are the part you want finished on your first run rather than saved for later. Materials like Fine Silk Cloth, Tamahagane, Power Stones, and Oni Stones are the opposite — those feed the Well-Rounded and Dressed to Kill trophies and can be topped up across two playthroughs.
Kyoto rewards patience more than speed. Save citizens where you find them, pull every Honoki plant you walk past, and keep Oni Vision pulsing between fights — the district hides enough Whetstones, sake, and cloth in stalls and side rooms that a careful first pass will spare you an entire cleanup lap later.
