MapleStory Classic: Why Assassins Scroll Earrings With DEX, Not LUK

A Level 20 Yellow Square and four 60% DEX scrolls turn roughly 600k mesos into a pair worth about double.

Scrolling earrings for a stat in MapleStory Classic comes down to a cheap base item, a stack of 60% scrolls, and a handful of upgrade slots. A play session in Perion, filmed in the final minutes before a scheduled server maintenance, walks through exactly that: a Level 49 Assassin feeding Earring DEX Scroll: Intermediate into a Level 20 Yellow Square to lift its damage before the end of early access.

Quick answer: A Yellow Square earring holds five upgrade slots, and each Earring DEX Scroll: Intermediate adds +2 DEX at a 60% success rate. Four hits out of five attempts produced a +8 DEX pair.

Earring DEX Scroll: Intermediate explained

The Earring DEX Scroll: Intermediate improves Dexterity on earrings with a 60% success rate and a +2 DEX bonus per successful attempt. A failed attempt still consumes one upgrade slot but adds nothing, and there is no destruction risk at this tier. You can confirm a hit on the spot: the earring tooltip gains the DEX value and the Remaining Enhancements count drops by one.

The scroll comes from quests rather than a shop. It appears as a random reward from Proof of Companionship at a 25% chance, and as a reward you can pick from Regained Vitality and from Not Ready to Go Home Yet. The matching STR, INT and LUK versions work the same way on the same earring slots.

Why an Assassin scrolls DEX instead of LUK

Assassins wield claws, and a claw requires DEX equal to its equip level. That requirement can be met with base ability points or with DEX supplied by equipment. Every point of DEX that gear provides is a point of base AP that no longer has to sit in DEX and can instead be moved into LUK, the stat that actually drives Thief damage.

The Assassin in the footage sits at 4 STR, 40 DEX, 4 INT and 230 LUK. Because DEX on the earrings covers part of the claw requirement, a DEX scroll ends up functionally equivalent to a LUK scroll for the character’s damage, while costing noticeably less on the market. That price gap is the entire reason to pick the DEX scroll over the LUK version here.

Choosing the Yellow Square as the base

The Yellow Square is a Level 20 earring with 22 Magic Defense, +2 Critical Damage, and five upgrade slots. The lower level requirement is deliberate: a finished low-level earring can be equipped by far more characters, which widens its resale demand compared with higher-level alternatives carrying the same five slots.

Other earrings in the bag made the same point. A Cat’s Eye requires Level 35 and showed four remaining enhancements, while an Emerald Earrings pair requires Level 30 with five slots. A more expensive clean base does not grant extra scroll attempts, so the cheap Level 20 shell is simply the better home for the scrolls.

How the five scroll attempts played out

With five slots and five 60% scrolls, four attempts succeeded and one failed, leaving a Yellow Square (+4) at +8 DEX. The sequence ran clean through the first three slots before the only miss landed on the fourth.

Each successful application triggers the yellow scroll animation, while a failure shows a red hit-sparkle and no stat change. Because a four-success outcome on five 60% scrolls is squarely in the expected range, a mix of hits and the occasional miss is normal rather than bad luck.

Intermediate scrolls carry the highest average stat gain of the four tiers at +1.2 per slot, because their 60% success and +2 bonus beat the guaranteed +1 of a Lesser and the long-shot +3 of a Greater.

The meso math: roughly a 2x return

The scrolls ran about 550,000 to 560,000 mesos, and the clean Yellow Square base added roughly 4,000, for a total near 600,000 mesos. The finished +8 DEX pair was valued at about 1.2 million mesos on the market, which works out to roughly double the outlay on a single successful session.

Four successful hits explain the return. With fewer hits, the earring gains fewer DEX points and brings a lower resale price, because buyers pay for the stats shown on the item, not the scrolls used on it. The finished earring had 22 Magic Defense, +2 Critical Damage, and +8 DEX—the stats a buyer sees and prices.
