Logan’s turn as the Horseman of Death in Marvel’s Wolverine is not a costume swap or an optional path. It is a scripted story beat that begins with a fight he loses, runs through a mental simulation he cannot escape, and leaves him with a new combat ability he did not ask for.
Quick answer: Lady Deathstrike‘s poisoned sword shuts down Logan’s healing factor, so Jean Grey seals him inside the Helix Engine capsule. The capsule revives him as Apocalypse’s Horseman of Death and unlocks the Helix Claws.
Helix Claws: What the new ability does
The transformation is tied directly to a gameplay unlock. Once Logan wakes up inside the simulation wearing the Horseman armor, an on-screen tutorial appears and hands you the Helix Claws.
- Releases a powerful blast of force across a wide area.
- Must recharge before it can be used again.
- Comes with a visual tell — Logan’s claws glow blue while he is in the Horseman state.
The sequence doubles as a combat arena. You clear waves of shadow enemies for XP in chunks of 30, 60, 120, 150, 170, 240, and 260, and Logan reaches Level 23 partway through the first fight. If you see the “Helix Claws unlocked” prompt and the Continue button, the ability is yours for the rest of the fight.

It starts on a helicopter. Logan fights Lady Deathstrike, the rotor is damaged, and the aircraft goes down. She recovers first and draws a sword wreathed in purple energy, calling Logan “Shinigami” before running him through the chest.
The sword’s poison is the whole problem. It stops his healing factor cold, which is the one thing that normally makes a wound like that survivable. Jean Grey arrives, throws Deathstrike into a truck with telekinesis, and finds Logan bleeding out and not regenerating.
Essex — Mister Sinister — answers her call and immediately asks for the Helix Engine. His reasoning is that the device already activated Walter’s X-gene, so it should be able to strengthen Logan’s. Jean pulls the engine out of the wreck, puts Logan in the capsule, and it seals shut with a blue glow. Then The Hand attack, and she has to hold a telekinetic dome over the capsule while it works.
Inside the simulation: the wasteland and the voice
Logan does not wake up in the crash site. He wakes up in a barren wasteland under a red sky, dressed in ornate black, gold, and red armor with a red scarf. A voice greets him with “Hello, James” and tells him the dreamer has finally woken.
The voice narrates while you fight. It explains that the sword’s poison corrupted the wellspring of his life, that it has purged the poison, and that his rage now runs clear and free. When the shadow enemies are down, Logan finds bodies on the ground — including Mystique and Cyclops — and then Jean appears, injured, as his claws extend and his eyes glow blue.

The voice eventually names itself. It calls the dreamscape a garden, calls itself the caretaker and Logan its sickle, and then says outright: “I am Apocalypse.” The claim that follows is the point of the whole sequence — “I will never let you go. My Horseman of Death.”
The Jean Grey loop and Essex’s manipulation
The second half of the sequence repeats the same beat on purpose. Logan slashes through a wave of enemies in the wasteland, stabs a flaming Phoenix figure in the sky, and the moment cuts to him stabbing Jean in a quiet forest. Then it loops. He chokes her, stabs her, holds her while she dies, and it starts again.
Essex narrates the loop rather than stopping it. He tells Logan “you killed her, again,” that he cannot help himself and cannot accept what he has done, and lands on the line that sums up the manipulation: “You are unstoppable. But you are not unbreakable.” When Logan blames him, Essex’s answer is simply “No, you did.”
The forest scenes are part of the same simulation, not flashbacks you control. Jean calls Logan “James” there and refuses to use his middle name, which is the thread Essex and Apocalypse both pull on.
What Logan loses when he wakes up
The first cut back to reality is not a victory. Logan is pinning Jean against the crashed helicopter with a hand around her throat. He sniffs, recognizes her, and calms down. His first question is “What did I do?” and her answer is that it was not him.
Around them are the defeated Hand ninjas. Jean says she tried to hold them off, but between Logan and The Hand she could not, and the Helix Engine is gone. Logan’s response sets up what comes next — they have to find it.

Don’t Go Gentle objectives in order
The mission that carries this sequence is called Don’t Go Gentle, and its objectives are short and passive. Follow the orange markers with the distance counters and the glowing blue trail on the ground.
| Objective | What you do |
|---|---|
| Take a seat | Sit with Jean on the mossy log in the forest clearing |
| Where’d he go now? | Follow the armored Horseman figure along the blue energy trail |
| Listen | Talk to Essex until he takes control |
Essex’s pitch during that last objective is a recruitment attempt. He calls Logan the “Living Weapon,” says finding him was fate, and when Logan refuses to join his team, Essex says he will simply have to change his mind. That is when the mind control takes hold and Logan’s eyes go red.
By the end, Logan is standing in the desolate forest staring at his bloody hands, asking a dying Jean who she is while Essex tells him she is no one. The Helix Claws stay with you, the Helix Engine does not, and Apocalypse’s claim on Logan is now an open thread rather than a defeated one.
