Wolverine sneaking is a funny idea on its face — a man in a bright yellow suit crouched in a field of grass, waiting for someone to walk past. But stealth is a real system in Insomniac’s PS5 exclusive, and at default settings the enemy patrols in the snowy Reaver camps are remarkably slow to notice a six-foot mutant gutting their coworker a few feet away.
Quick answer: Stealth is optional, not required. How quickly enemies notice you is governed by the Stealth Awareness slider under Settings → Gameplay → Challenge Level, and you can change it at any time.
How stealth works in Marvel’s Wolverine
The core loop is simple. Tall grass breaks line of sight, so Logan can drop into a patch from a tree or a ledge, crouch, and move between patrolling enemies without being seen. Hold L2 to focus on a target, close the gap, and trigger a takedown from behind.

Enemies you can target carry a glowing marker on their back, which is your cue that they are unaware and open to a quiet kill. Reavers announce themselves constantly over comms and in idle chatter, so audio doubles as a positioning tool — one will say he heard something and walk straight toward your grass patch, which is an opening rather than a problem.

Sprint can override crouch by default, which is an easy way to stand up and blow a stealth approach. There is a separate Sprint Overrides Crouch toggle if you would rather it never happen.

The detection model is forgiving. It is entirely possible to pull a Reaver into the grass and kill him within the sight line of another patrolling Reaver without that second enemy reacting at all. Clear out an entire pocket of a camp, one takedown at a time, and the survivors keep repeating their patrol dialogue.

That is a design choice, not an oversight in the way players usually mean it. Game director Mike Daly has been blunt that Logan was never meant to be a stealth protagonist in the traditional sense.
Making Wolverine a full-blown, super-stealth character is not our priority. He uses stealth because it’s the most efficient way to accomplish his goals, not because he’s afraid of being found.
Some encounters can be cleared quietly if nobody ever becomes aware of you, but plenty cannot. Insomniac’s stated ideal is a mix — thin the ranks silently, then go loud when the odds swing. Players have, predictably, read that as permission to skip the sneaking entirely.
Stealth takedown rewards: XP, rage, and Level 7 unlocks
Every stealth takedown pays out +20 XP, and the popup appears on screen the moment the animation resolves. That is your confirmation the kill registered as a stealth kill rather than open combat.

Stealth kills also feed the rage meter, and that rage does not decay. Quietly removing three or four enemies leaves you holding a full tank of momentum for the fight you start on purpose afterward, which is the intended rhythm rather than a exploit.

Level-ups arrive quickly while clearing a camp this way. Hitting Level 7 delivers a Level Up Rewards screen with:
- Special technique unlocked: Knee Breaker Lv 2
- Special technique unlocked: Relentless
- +1 Technique Point
Stealth Awareness setting: adjust how fast enemies detect you
If forgiving enemies bother you, the fix is a slider rather than a difficulty preset. Open the pause menu, go to Settings, then Gameplay, then Challenge Level. Inside that menu sits Stealth Awareness, which controls how quickly enemies detect you while sneaking, alongside separate sliders for Enemy Health and Enemy Damage.
These values can be mixed and matched at any point during a playthrough. You can leave enemy damage low while pushing stealth awareness up, or the reverse.
Difficulty presets and enemy values
| Difficulty | Aggressiveness | Damage | Health |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Man | 2/10 | 2/10 | 3/10 |
| The Hunter | 4/10 | 3/10 | 4/10 |
| The Mutant | 5/10 | 5/10 | 5/10 |
| The Weapon | 6/10 | 7/10 | 7/10 |
| The Best There Is | 7/10 | 9/10 | 8/10 |
Aggressiveness governs how relentlessly enemies attack, damage is how much health they strip per hit, and health is how long they take to kill. The Man removes most combat challenge and makes Logan unable to be knocked out. The Mutant is the developer-intended balance. The Best There Is is built for players who want a punishing fight.
There are no difficulty-gated trophies. Nothing in the Platinum list requires a harder setting, and no suit or secret unlock is tied to one, so tuning Stealth Awareness costs you nothing.
Other settings that affect stealth
- Combat Game Speed — slows stealth and active combat to 70%, 50%, or 30% without touching cutscenes or dialogue.
- Heartbeat Audio — plays audio and vibration cues for nearby enemies.
- Enemy Shaders — applies flat single-colour fills to enemy types so patrols read clearly against snow and grass.
- Senses Threat Color Customization — recolours enemy combat effects to your preference.
- Special Techniques Mode — switches technique activation between hold and toggle.
How to confirm a Challenge Level change applied
Whether you use any of this is the point. Logan is not built to fear detection, and the game never forces a quiet clear — the grass is there as a way to stack rage and cut down numbers before the part everyone actually bought the game for.
