Minecraft Dungeons II is an action-RPG sequel set in the Minecraft universe, and its story campaign centers on a new dimension called the Sift. Stitched together, the game’s cutscenes form a complete narrative that runs from a quiet Overworld village to the destruction of a weaponized portal. The through-line is simple: the Illagers find a source of pure soul energy, turn it into a weapon, and the hero has to shut it down.
Quick answer: The story follows the hero from the fall of Squid Coast to the coastal refuge of Brave Haven, into the Sift, and finally to the destruction of the Illager High Council’s soul-powered portal weapon.
The full cinematic compilation runs about sixteen minutes, and it closes on a teaser that sets up whatever comes next.

How the Sift and the Illager High Council start the story
The Overworld begins in peace after the heroics of earlier adventures. That calm breaks when Illagers digging deep beneath the deepslate uncover an ancient glowing gateway. Beyond it lies the Sift, a dimension saturated with soul energy.

Soul cubes taken from the Sift let three Illager leaders grow stronger. The Prime Enchanter, Grand Illusioner, and Supreme Evoker join forces as the Illager High Council, seeking to conquer the Overworld.

With their new powers, the Council tears open dimensional rifts across the Overworld. Soul-corrupted beasts and Illager troops pour through, burning villages while sculk spreads across the land. Squid Coast is overrun.

The hero and surviving villagers escape by boat, rowing across open water at night. The convoy reaches Brave Haven, a bustling seaside village where refugees try to rebuild. The peace there is short-lived.

A rift tears open inside Brave Haven itself. Illager warriors emerge, and the armed hero is pulled straight through the portal into the enemy’s home dimension.
Inside the Sift: Tuners, Echo Golems, and the Singer
The hero lands in the Sift, a vibrant realm filled with soul energy. Rather than a hostile wasteland, it is home to peaceful creatures who become the hero’s allies.

Three groups of natives define the dimension:
- Tuners — small blue quadruped creatures that roam the Sift’s plains.
- Echo Golems — floating, block-headed constructs that carry soul blocks.
- The Singer — a colossal, gentle entity whose song awakens the Sift into celebration.

The hero soon discovers the Illagers’ true operation. Industrial pipes run deep into the Sift, draining glowing soul ichor and feeding it back to the Overworld to power the weaponized portal.
The note block machine and the Council confrontations
Back in the Overworld, the hero fights through the corruption to reach the Illagers’ portal fortress. Along the way come confrontations with the Supreme Evoker, who commands a massive corrupted copper golem, and the Prime Enchanter, who wields dual soul cubes.
The key to fighting back is the note block machine. The hero recovers colored musical note blocks and installs them into a sequential device, which channels harmonic energy against the corruption. Completing this puzzle unlocks the Xbox achievement Note Block Virtuoso, worth 20 Gamerscore, with a rarity of 0.41%.
Reactivating the machine reopens the ancient Sift portal, delighting the Echo Golems and prompting the Singer to dance. In gratitude, the Singer bestows the gift of song on the hero, surrounding them with sparkling musical notes.

How the Sift story ends
The final fight takes place back in the core portal chamber. There, the Supreme Evoker rides a massive corrupted golem into close combat. The hero uses the restored note block array to direct the Singer’s song into the portal structure, pushing it to the point of explosion.
With the weapon destroyed, peace returns to both realms. The shattered portal fades in the Sift, and Brave Haven erupts into a festival of fireworks and dancing shared by villagers, animals, and the hero.
The story leaves things open: after the credits, a cloaked Illager appears as a shadowy figure, carrying a staff glowing red through a lightless underground abyss toward a light of unknown origin. This teaser clearly points to future content.
