Mistfall Hunter: Every Golden Cipher Word and the NPC Who Deciphers It

Match each cipher's clue words to the right Windrest Camp NPC to claim the Epic-tier bonus reward.

Match each cipher’s clue words to the right Windrest Camp NPC to claim the Epic-tier bonus reward.

Golden Ciphers in Mistfall Hunter only pay out their best reward when you hand them to the one NPC in Windrest Camp who can read them. Each Cipher carries two strings of words, and those words tell you exactly which of the seven camp NPCs to visit. Pick the wrong one and you still get a payout, but you lose the bonus item tied to deciphering it correctly.

Quick answer: Read the words printed on your Golden Cipher, find them in the table below, and take the Cipher to the matching NPC. Choose Decipher when you talk to them to collect the bonus reward, which has a high chance of being Epic rarity.

Golden Cipher words and the correct NPC for each

Every Golden Cipher, whether it is a Prayer Cipher, Lost Cipher, Old World Cipher, or Nameless Cipher, includes clue words that point to a single camp NPC. Find your Cipher’s words in the table, then bring it to the NPC in that row.

NPC (Camp Role)Cipher Words
Pip (Auction House)Mantra, Score, Plucking, Tree Hollow, Secret Cache, Elder Edict
Dew (Maiden)Homeward, Achor, Prophecy, Spindle, Echo
Soekja (The Bird)Stone Steps, Tides, Signpost, Supplies
Sigrid (Tavern Wife)Sealing Wax, Residual Heat, Acid, Malt, Cloves
Cazarro (Merchant)City State, Intelligence, Insight, Balance, Blood, Barter, Haggling
Dramm (Blacksmith)Fire, Brimstone, Ashes, Anvil, Furnace, Smoke
Merimo (Pip’s Giant Goat)Hay, Cheese, Rugs, Caravan, Camel Bells, Salt Licks

The theme of each word usually hints at its owner. Fire, Anvil, and Furnace belong to Dramm the blacksmith, while Barter, Haggling, and Blood point to Cazarro the merchant. Hay, Cheese, and Camel Bells all lead to Merimo, Pip’s giant goat.

Mistfall Hunter Decipher Golden Cipher Bonus Loot

What you need before you can decipher

Two things must be true before the Decipher option shows up on any NPC. Miss either and the reward stays locked.

Reach character level 5. The Decipher interaction only appears on camp NPCs once you hit level 5. If no NPC will accept your Cipher before then, that is expected behavior, not a bug.

Extract with the Cipher in your inventory. Golden Ciphers drop as Legendary-quality scrolls during a run, and you have to survive and extract to carry one back to camp. If you die before extracting and the Cipher is not in a protected pocket, other players can take it just like any other loot.

How to hand in a Golden Cipher

Return to Windrest Camp with the Cipher and read the two lines of words printed on it. Match those words to a row in the table above to find the correct NPC.
Walk up to that NPC and open their menu. Choose the Decipher option rather than any shop, forge, or quest option.
Confirm the exchange. The NPC reads the Cipher and gives you the bonus item on top of the standard payout, and that item has a high chance to be Epic rarity.

How to confirm it worked, and what goes wrong

You know the match was correct when the NPC awards a bonus item alongside the normal decipher result. Hand a Cipher to any NPC not listed for those words and the exchange still completes, but you only receive the base payout and the bonus is gone.

If the Decipher option is missing entirely, the usual cause is being below level 5. Keep the Cipher, level up, and the option will appear. There is no benefit to hoarding Golden Ciphers, since the decipher function can be switched off while Ciphers are still in circulation, so hand them in once you can.

With the right NPC matched to every Cipher’s clue words, each Golden Cipher you extract turns into a reliable bonus reward and another entry toward the grander prizes of the Gylden Rush event.
