DMZ in Modern Warfare 4 gives each Operator its own progression. Each Operator levels a Dog Tag, earns Trait Points, picks perks from three trait trees, and can eventually Prestige for a permanent bonus. None of this connects to your 1–55 player level, Multiplayer Prestige, or your 1–70 DMZ level. An Operator can also be lost if you fail to exfil.

Quick answer: Level an Operator’s Dog Tag from Steel I to Onyx III to earn 18 Trait Points. Then equip the required gear on that Operator and pay 200,000, 300,000, or 500,000 DMZ Cash to Prestige.

DMZ Operator Prestige requirements for every tier

Every Prestige requires 18 Trait Points. The gear and cash costs rise at the second and third Prestige, then stay the same for every Prestige after the third.

Weapons must be Rare quality or higher at every tier. You must earn 18 Trait Points, though spending them before Prestiging is optional. The Operator must be assigned to Active Duty and cleared for deployment. An Operator who is Missing In Action or awaiting rescue cannot Prestige.

The gear has to be on the Operator you’re Prestiging, either in their loadout or their backpack. Items in your Stash don’t count. The cash comes out of your bank.

How Active Duty Operators work in DMZ

You always deploy with an Active Duty Operator. The ACTIVE DUTY screen has three card slots. You start with two. The third unlocks at DMZ level 15, and Vault Edition owners get it from the start. An empty slot shows a “+” for recruiting a new Operator. Counters such as “ACTIVE DUTY (2/3)” show how full the roster is.

Each Operator card shows three things:

  • The Operator’s identity, such as UCTF, SAS or MIN-HEE
  • A Dog Tag rank badge, such as STEEL, BRONZE I or ONYX III
  • The Operator’s Trait Point total, such as “18 TRAIT POINTS”

The EQUIP and MANAGE buttons sit under the equipped Operator’s card. Next to them, a backpack and loadout grid shows what that Operator will bring on the next run. Traits belong to the Operator, not your account, so progress on one Operator never carries over to another. An Operator stays tied to their slot until you dismiss them.

Earning Trait Points through Dog Tag ranks

Trait Points come from DMZ XP. You earn it by finishing tasks and objectives, killing enemies, and most of all by extracting alive. A successful exfil gives XP to the Operator you deployed, and that XP levels their Dog Tag.

The Dog Tag has 18 levels across six tiers: Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Damascus, and Onyx, with three steps in each tier. Each level grants one Trait Point. That caps an Operator at 18 Trait Points at Onyx III.

On an Operator’s Traits screen, your unspent points appear as a large number in the center labeled “TRAIT POINTS.” A bar at the bottom shows “<number> XP TO NEXT TRAIT POINT.”

Dog Tag progression is independent of your DMZ rank. DMZ rank spans levels 1 to 70 and unlocks F.O.B. stations and recipes. DMZ XP also advances your standard player level from 1–55, while XP earned in Multiplayer or Warzone never advances DMZ rank.

How to spend Trait Points on an Operator

In the F.O.B., walk to the Operators station across from the 3D Printer. You can also open it from the quick navigation menu on the left.
Select MANAGE on the Operator you want to build, then open their Traits screen.
Pick a tree. WARFIGHTER is red, SCOUT is gold, and SURVIVALIST is teal. The fourth tab, PRESTIGE, has a crown icon.
Point to an available trait and choose “ACQUIRE TRAIT.” This uses one of your unspent points.

You can check the purchase in the tree’s next row: its “?” slots become named traits. A hidden trait appears only after you purchase a trait in the row above.

You cannot change or refund trait selections. To begin again, switch to another Operator or Prestige this one.

Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist tree rules

Each tree holds 22 traits, for 66 in total. One Operator can only ever spend 18 points, so no Operator gets close to owning everything. The trees follow a few fixed rules:

  • Major traits are always visible, so you can read them before you commit.
  • Minor traits appear as “?” until you purchase a trait in the row above.
  • Your first point in any tree always gives a random minor trait.
  • Major traits come in pairs. Minor traits come in groups of three.
  • Choosing a trait makes the remaining options in that branch unavailable.
  • Major traits farther down the tree become available when you have spent 3, 6, or 9 points in it.

Points can go into one tree, two trees, or all three. A frequent approach is to spend nine points in each of two trees, completing both. Minor traits roll at random, so Operators with identical builds may receive different perks.

All major Operator Trait effects

Warfighter traits

TraitEffectPoints in tree
Combat ResistanceLess damage from explosives and enemy Tacticals3
Equipment ProfessionalLethals and Tacticals slowly recharge to slot max3
Quick FixShorter health regen delay after a kill6
Viper SenseHidden from thermal optics and AI targeting6
Adaptive RestockHostiles drop one extra item9
PossumOne full-health self-revive into Last Stand per match9

Quick Fix triggers on kills against both enemy Operators and AI hostiles. Possum brings you back from death into Last Stand with full health, but only once per match.

Scout traits

TraitEffectPoints in tree
Container LooterChance of an extra item from containers3
Hostile LooterHostiles sometimes drop printer ingredients3
UAV UpgradeLonger range and duration, upgrades to Advanced UAV6
Field CraftingCraft from Common printer resources mid-match6
Thermal PaddingHidden from UAVs9
OverwatchUAV towers you activate never expire9

Hostile Looter generally drops Uncommon ingredients, with a very slim chance of dropping a Rare one. Thermal Padding prevents detection by standard UAVs. An Advanced UAV can still find you, but shows you as a standard UAV would.

Survivalist traits

TraitEffectPoints in tree
Consumable DurationConsumables last longer3
Faster ReviveFaster revives3
Free ReviveYour first Wound repairs itself6
Impact SmokesSmoke deploys when you’re downed6
Die HardAuto-calls exfil in Last Stand, no bleed-out9
Numb the PainRevives apply Painkillers and Smelling Salts9

With Die Hard, reaching an exfil while in Last Stand calls the extraction automatically, and you never bleed out while downed.

Randomized minor traits

Minor traits differ between Operators. The following traits have appeared in the first slot or farther down the trees:

TraitTreeEffect
Adrenaline BurstWarfighterKills reset tactical sprint
Popcorn LethalsWarfighterHostiles hit by Lethals drop Lethals more often
Killing SpreeWarfighterKills extend active effects, up to double duration
InvestorScoutSlightly more cash extracted
Pack RatScout+20% printer resource capacity
Air SuperioritySurvivalistLonger UAV tower and SAM site duration
Deep BreathSurvivalistLonger underwater breath time
MetabolismSurvivalistSlowly regenerates health lost to tourniquets

A few other traits complete the pool. Pack Rat combines with Resource Hoarder. LT Hunter increases the paid intel awarded for activating a Lieutenant Tower. With Combat Scavenger, a hostile you kill has a small chance to leave an ingredient or valuable.

How to Prestige an Operator

Get the Operator to Onyx III so they hold 18 Trait Points, then exfil so they’re available on Active Duty.
Put the two weapons, Plate Carrier, Backpack, and four ingredients for your tier into that Operator’s loadout or backpack. Move everything else into your Stash.
At the Operators station, select MANAGE, open Traits, and choose the PRESTIGE tab with the crown icon.
Check the three requirement rows: EARN 18 TRAIT POINTS (displayed as 18/18), RARE GEAR TO EQUIP (Plate Carrier, Weapon 2/2, Printer Ingredient 4/4, and Backpack), and REQUIRED CASH. A row is marked complete once its requirement is satisfied.
Confirm the Prestige. The confirmation screen warns that “Everything left on your operator will be consumed.”

You know it worked when the cash is gone from your bank, the Operator’s trait points have reset, and a new Permanent Prestige Trait appears on their PRESTIGE tab.

Secure slots don’t protect items during a Prestige. Anything still on the Operator is consumed along with the required gear.

What Prestige resets and what it rewards

A Prestige removes the following from the Operator:

  • Every trait you picked and all trait tree progress
  • Any unspent Trait Points
  • The required gear, plus anything else left in the loadout or backpack
  • The DMZ Cash payment

Your DMZ level remains unchanged. The Operator gains one Permanent Prestige Trait, chosen randomly from the trait pool. It stays active alongside the 18 points earned again, making a Prestiged Operator stronger than a fresh one. The trait stays with the Operator if you change their skin, assign them to another Active Duty slot, or dismiss them.

An Operator can hold three Permanent Prestige Traits at most. Prestige is still infinite after that. From the fourth Prestige onward, each one offers a random trait you don’t already have. You can swap it in for one of your three, or decline it and keep your current set. Prestiging multiple Operators also earns calling cards and other rewards that are still classified.

Missing In Action: protecting a built Operator

If you die and don’t extract, the after-action report shows “FAILED TO EXFIL” and “MISSING IN ACTION” over the Operator you deployed. Their card gets an MIA notice, and they can’t deploy or Prestige until you deal with it. You have three options:

  • Pay bank cash to retrieve them with their traits intact
  • Use an Operator Rescue Beacon to bring them back
  • Dismiss them and recruit a new Operator, who starts the Dog Tag grind from scratch

Retrieval costs more the more traits an Operator has, so a full 18-point Operator is the most expensive to bring back. Rescued Operators also return without their gear. Once a rescue goes through, the MIA notice disappears and the EQUIP button comes back on the card. In the meantime, you can keep playing with any of your other Active Duty Operators.
