Raining Thunder is a Silver trophy worth 50 Gamerscore in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. It becomes available during the bridge defense late in Losing Ground, the fifth campaign mission, which takes place in Hajin City, South Korea. Its description says “Kill 15 enemies with 3 mortar rounds in a row in ‘Losing Ground’,” a requirement many players misread. The 15 kills are shared across three consecutive rounds; each shell does not need to take out 15 enemies.
Quick answer: On Recruit, mount the truck mortar and fire range 3 into the group on the left. Then fire range 2 down the right-side road, then range 3 farther down the same road, for 15 total kills.
Raining Thunder requirements
- Mission: Losing Ground (mission 5), during the “Mount the Mortar Launcher” objective.
- Kill count: 15 enemies combined over three consecutive mortar rounds. A split like 3, 6 and 6 counts.
- Difficulty: any. Recruit is the easiest because you can absorb hits while you wait for enemies to bunch up.
- Ammo: mortar rounds are unlimited, so you can line up shots as long as you need to.
- Reward: a Silver trophy on PlayStation, or 50 Gamerscore on Xbox.
Civilians move through this area. Hitting civilians or friendlies counts as an objective failure, so check the impact zone before every shot.

The mortar sequence starts once your squad reaches the bridge. An enemy sniper kills the mortar operator, and once you take the sniper out, Lt. West orders Park onto the tube. The mortar is mounted on the bed of a military truck tagged “Serpent 1-5.” Climb into the back and use the “X USE MORTAR” prompt.

The mortar has no precise landing reticle. Instead, a range scale numbered 1 to 4 sits on the left side of the screen, and you judge distance from that. The controller layout is shown on the HUD.
| Action | Input |
|---|---|
| Adjust range | LS / RS |
| Rotate | RS |
| Zoom | LT |
| Fire | RT |
Enemy waves follow a set order. The first group arrives on the left, the next comes from the right, and later waves appear on nearby rooftops. An armored BMP eventually rolls up to the bridge. Once it’s destroyed, a helicopter drops the bridge and you’re forced off the mortar, so earn the achievement before that point.
How to unlock Raining Thunder: left, near right, far right
This route works through the first two waves in order and uses only two range settings. Aim for at least five kills per shell. That gets you to 15 even if one round lands slightly off.

Alternative route: transport truck first
Some players skip the opening left-side group and start with the right-side wave, where an enemy transport truck pulls up full of soldiers. The street on the far right is usually the most crowded target on the map, and a shell on the stopped truck can account for a big share of the 15 in one go.
| Round | Target | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Transport truck, right-side road | Once it stops |
| 2 | Enemies on a rooftop to the left | When grouped |
| 3 | Enemies in a parking lot, farther left | When grouped |
For the right-side road, a range of 3 aimed at the car in the middle of the street is a reliable spot to catch enemies as they group.
How to tell Raining Thunder has unlocked
On Xbox, a “Rare Achievement unlocked” notification slides up at the bottom of the screen showing “50 – MW4 – Raining Thunder.” PlayStation players get the standard Silver trophy pop. Both appear within seconds of the third shell landing, while you’re still on the mortar. If nothing appears after your third round, keep firing at fresh groups before the BMP arrives. Rounds are unlimited, and Raining Thunder only needs one three-shot stretch that adds up to 15.
