Mortal Shell 2: Best Weapons to Get First (Early-Game Locations)

Where to find the Axe & Dagger, Great Martyr's Blade, and Axatana within the first few hours of Fainweald.

Where to find the Axe & Dagger, Great Martyr’s Blade, and Axatana within the first few hours of Fainweald.

Weapons shape almost everything about how you fight in Mortal Shell 2, from quick, flashy dagger combos to slow, heavy strikes that stagger enemies before they can react. Eight primary weapons are hidden across the world, and the game never tells you which ones are worth chasing first. Three of them stand out for being both strong and reachable early, without forcing you to grind through packed enemy zones.

Quick answer: Grab the Axe & Dagger from the Shrine of Trials near Mushroom Village for a fast melee kit, the Great Martyr’s Blade from Martyr’s Prison for heavy range, and the Axatana from the locked tower past the Forgotten Tower for the fastest, most flexible weapon in the game.

Which early weapon fits your playstyle

Each of these three covers a different approach, so pick based on how you like to fight rather than raw numbers. The table below sums up their strengths and where they live.

Axe & Dagger: fast melee near Mushroom Village

The Axe & Dagger is the strongest pick if you want something quicker than the Iconoclast’s default swings, which matters a lot when Tiel is your first Shell. Its moveset lets you dart in and out of range, burying most enemies under a stream of hits. The running light attack is especially useful for catching foes off guard and one-shotting basic mobs in the opening zones.

It also pairs well with early Tarstones like the Duality Stone and Arbiter’s Prize, which smooths out the first stretch of the campaign considerably.

How to reach the Axe & Dagger

Head to the clearing near Mushroom Village where the Grisha Pup is locked in a cage by the Grisha Hunters. The Chapel Key sits on the church door here.
Use the Chapel Key to open the Shrine of Trials dungeon, west of the Mushroom Village beacon. The Axe & Dagger waits inside.

Great Martyr’s Blade: heavy range in Fainweald

If you prefer heavy weapons, the Great Martyr’s Blade is a greatsword with excellent reach. Its running heavy attack closes gaps and deals a burst of damage instantly, which suits an aggressive run-and-gun rhythm. It sits deep inside the Fainweald region, but the dungeon that holds it is easy to clear, and you can run past most of what guards it.

How to reach the Great Martyr’s Blade

From the Widow’s Overlook beacon, travel straight north to the Blackridge Pass beacon, then turn west along the bridges and follow the path to the Gloomshade Grove beacon.
Enter the cave right beside the Gloomshade Grove beacon. You will come out in front of the main entrance to the Citadel of Penance, where the Citadel Gate Lever is used.
Turn north and squeeze through the gap in the wall. Pass the miners and the well entrance to the Holding Cells dungeon, then keep going until the path ends.
At the end of the path, look left. The entrance to Martyr’s Prison sits behind some wooden boxes, and the blade is inside.

Axatana: the fastest weapon in the game

The Axatana blends speed and power in one kit. Light attacks turn it into a pair of dual-wield katanas with the fastest moveset in the game, while heavy attacks fold it into a large axe that staggers enemies with slow, weighty swings. The running light attack spins you into a whirlwind of blades that shreds groups faster than anything else you can carry.

Only a single elite enemy stands between you and the pickup, so it is far more manageable to claim than the long route suggests.

How to reach the Axatana

From the Outskirts of Mammon beacon, head south and take the Bone Gate on the bridge to reach Castigator’s Keep.
Go southeast to the white stone island connected to the keep by a bridge, then take the Bone Gate east.
Continue east past the Parasitic Stash dungeon and take another Bone Gate. This drops you directly at the locked tower southeast of the Forgotten Tower, south of the southeastern Corrupted Gate.
Interact with the switch in the wall to lift the metal gate. Defeat the Gloom Seeker inside, then interact with the pedestal in the center to claim the Axatana.

Any one of these three sets you up well for the opening hours, and none of them require a punishing detour. If you are running Tiel and want fluid combat right away, start with the Axe & Dagger, then work toward the Axatana once you are comfortable moving through Mammon, since its speed can flip a hard fight in your favor almost immediately.
