Certain paths in Mortal Shell 2 are sealed off by thick knots of black tendrils. Try to push through one and you get the same message every time, telling you the route is blocked by corruption and that the Gloom Siphon will distill a cleansing vapor once enough Ova are collected. The game never puts a hard number on that threshold, which is where most players get stuck.
Quick answer: Collect 7-8 Ova, return to Marrow Keep, and interact with the Gloom Siphon in the Ova Nursery to unlock Mether’s Breath. That ability lets you clear any corruption blockage by holding the interact prompt on it.

What Mether’s Breath does
Mether’s Breath is an item that lands in your inventory once you meet the Ova requirement. It is the single tool that removes corruption blockages, so there is no way to open those sealed paths without it. On top of the cleansing function, it also gives you fast travel between beacons and between the various rooms inside Marrow Keep.

You gather Ova by cleansing beacons and clearing corrupted gates across the world. In the early game, fully finishing the tutorial hands you 3 Ova outright. The remaining 4-5 you need for the unlock come from cleansing beacons out in the world, and the easiest-to-reach ones in the northern part of the map are the fastest way to hit the total.
Not every source is worth the same. Here is how the rewards break down.
| Source | Ova reward |
|---|---|
| Completing the tutorial | 3 |
| Cleansing a regular beacon | 1 each |
| Beacon next to a Corrupted Gate | 3 each |
| Clearing a full gate and its final boss | 26 |
Since the unlock only needs 7-8 Ova, you do not have to tackle a full Corrupted Gate this early. Combining the tutorial’s 3 Ova with a handful of nearby regular beacons is enough to clear the bar.

Clear a corruption blockage
With Mether’s Breath in your inventory, travel back to any spot where black tendrils were blocking the way. Walk up to the growth and press and hold the interact prompt. The blockage vanishes on the spot and the path behind it opens up, so you know it worked when the tendrils disappear and you can walk straight through.
From that point on, every corruption wall in the world works the same way. Hold the prompt, watch it clear, and keep moving. The same ability doubles as your fast-travel network, so cleansing early also opens up quicker routes between beacons and the rooms of Marrow Keep.
