Ascension is one of five bronze trophies in Mortal Shell 2 that you can permanently miss in a playthrough. Its description gives nothing away — “Discover the secret of the Mango” — and the chain behind it involves a hidden item, a hidden cave, and a fish that eats you. The Mango itself spawns once per run.
Quick answer: Grab Mether’s Flesh from the hidden chamber below the crater near the Pulsing Caves Beacon, then offer it to the Nightfish in the swamp cave east of the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon. It swallows you into the Mango Sanctuary, where interacting with the giant Mango unlocks Ascension.
What you need before starting
The whole chain hinges on a single key item. Everything else is travel and a bit of combat.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Key item | Mether’s Flesh |
| First location | Pulsing Caves Beacon, Sanguine Caverns (northernmost Corrupt Gate) |
| Second location | Swamp east of the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon |
| Fast travel | Both Beacons must be unlocked |
| Trophy | Ascension (Bronze) — missable, one Mango per playthrough |
Note: the Slayer Seal disables achievements while equipped. If you are wearing it, unequip it before you pick up the Mango, or the trophy will not fire.

Feeding the Nightfish to reach the Mango Sanctuary
Mether’s Flesh has no use where you found it. The item is an offering, and the only thing that accepts it lives on the other side of the map.

What the Mango does after you get it
The Mango is not just a trophy token. It slots into two different roles, and you have to pick one.
| Slot | Effect |
|---|---|
| Active item | Restores 50% of your health, usable once |
| Passive item | Unlocks the Mango Mask cosmetic, equipped from the Change Masks tab at any Beacon |
Since only one Mango spawns per playthrough, spending it as a heal means giving up the mask for that run. The trophy pops on pickup regardless of which way you use it.
Why Ascension fails to unlock
- The Slayer Seal was equipped when you picked up the Mango — achievements are disabled while it is on, so unequip it and the game returns to its normal state.
- You reached the Sanctuary but walked past the giant Mango without interacting with it.
- You finished the game and rolled into New Game Plus. Missed items reset, so the Mango has to be found again on the new cycle.
Ascension is recoverable, unlike the Tar Golem’s “No, You Still Can’t Win” trophy, which is gone for good if you miss it in the prologue. If your first run ends without the Mango, the same crater, the same fish, and the same dungeon are all waiting in NG+ — your gear and valuables carry over, so the return trip is short.
