The Veteran’s Battle Axe is one of eight primary weapons in Mortal Shell 2, and it sits inside an early-game dungeon called the King’s Crypt. The crypt is easy to walk past, so the tricky part is not the fight but finding the hidden entrance and surviving the trap-filled interior.

Where to find the King’s Crypt entrance

The King’s Crypt sits directly north of the Blackridge Pass Beacon in the Fainweald region. You reach it on foot in under a minute, but the doorway is concealed behind an illusory wall below a cliff, which is why so many players miss it.

Fast travel to the Blackridge Pass Beacon and turn east. Keep moving until you reach a large open field where a group of enemies is fighting among themselves. You can let them thin each other out before you engage.

Turn north at the field and walk up the small hill. This leads you to the area with the Shattered Beacon and the Crumbling Tunnel dungeon. Deal with the enemies here as you push forward.

Keep heading north until you reach a ledge. Look over the edge and you will see the entrance to the King’s Crypt directly below. Drop down and pass through the illusory wall to enter.

King’s Crypt walkthrough and traps

The crypt is built around explosive barrels, pressure plates, and self-detonating zombies. A Sidearm makes the whole run far safer because you can trigger hazards from a distance instead of getting caught in the blast.

Take the elevator down to the main level. On this first floor, watch the floor for pressure plates and step around them while you fight the enemies in the tunnel.

Use a Sidearm to blow up the oil barrels in the corner and open a new path. An exploding zombie waits in the tunnel behind them, so detonate it from range or dodge the blast when it closes in.

Move slowly through the tunnel ahead. It holds several pressure plates and a bear trap on the ground, so pick your path carefully and avoid all of them.

Drop to the level below and destroy the wooden wall behind you to open a doorway to the next section. Before stepping through, use your Sidearm again on the oil barrels visible in the next room, since more exploding zombies there will set them off if you rush in.

Once the barrels and zombies are gone, a spear-wielding soldier guards the stairway. Beat him, then blow up the barrels on the staircase’s first landing and grab the Laterite on the ground before climbing higher.

Three more exploding zombies wait on the final landing past the doorway. Let them detonate themselves along with the nearby wooden crates, which uncovers a hole in the floor just ahead.

Drop through the hole into a small room with another spear-wielding elite soldier. Defeat him, then interact with the headless corpse next to the crypt to pick up the Veteran’s Battle Axe.

How to confirm you got the weapon

A “New Weapon Acquired: Veteran’s Battle Axe” banner appears on screen the moment you loot the body, with prompts to confirm or inspect it. After that, the axe shows up under the Weapons tab in your inventory, ready to equip.

If nothing happens at the headless corpse, the elite soldier in that final room is still alive or you have not reached the correct bottom chamber. Every reward in the King’s Crypt sits at the end of the drop-down sequence, so keep clearing rooms until you fall into the small crypt room described above.
