Nibbled-On Book in WoW Forever: How to Start and Complete the Quest

A level 2 Elwynn Forest quest that starts from a kobold drop and ends with Brother Paxton inside Northshire Abbey.

A level 2 Elwynn Forest quest that starts from a kobold drop and ends with Brother Paxton inside Northshire Abbey.

The Nibbled-On Book is a quest-starting item that drops from kobolds in Elwynn Forest, and it opens an eight-part chain built around the small library inside Northshire Abbey. It is a level 2 quest with a level 1 requirement, so a brand-new character can pick it up within the first few minutes of play.

Quick answer: Kill kobolds in Elwynn Forest until the Nibbled-On Book drops, right-click it in your bags to accept the quest, then hand it to Brother Paxton in the Library Wing of Northshire Abbey.

Where the Nibbled-On Book drops in Elwynn Forest

The book is a unique, bind-on-pickup quest item that comes off the kobolds wandering the Northshire area. There is no quest giver to find first, and no breadcrumb pointing you at it. The chain only exists once the item lands in your bags, which is why plenty of players walk past it without knowing it is there.

Kobold Vermin are by far the most common source, and they are also the first enemies a new Human character fights, so the book usually shows up during the standard opening kill quest. The drop is not guaranteed on any single kill, so expect to clear a handful of kobolds before it appears.

How to start and turn in the Nibbled-On Book quest

Open your bags and find the Nibbled-On Book. Right-click it to accept the quest. The tooltip flags the item as one that begins a quest, so you do not need to visit a trainer or an NPC to get it started.

Head back to Northshire Abbey. From the courtyard outside, walk in past Marshal McBride and continue into the inner halls rather than stopping at the main chamber.
Enter the Library Wing and look for Brother Paxton, the librarian. He carries a yellow question mark above his head once you have the quest active, which makes him easy to spot among the other abbey NPCs.

Talk to Paxton and click Complete Quest. He takes the chewed-up book back and the quest closes out immediately, with no travel or follow-up objective in between.

Rewards and how to confirm the quest completed

Turning the book in pays out 90 experience and 17 copper. There is no gear choice at this stage, since the reward for the chain as a whole arrives much later.

You know it worked when the quest clears from your log, the book disappears from your bags, and Paxton immediately offers a follow-up. If you want to verify it on a character you have already levelled, run this in the chat box:

/run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(91741))

The book cannot be shared with party members. Every player who wants the chain needs their own drop.

What the Nibbled-On Book unlocks next

The turn-in is the first link in an eight-quest chain that keeps you inside Northshire while it plays out. Paxton hands you the next step straight away, and the thread runs through the kobolds stealing and eating books from his library.

  • Nibbled-On Book
  • Rascally Rodents
  • Mining Consultant
  • The Big Picture
  • Follow That Kobold!
  • Shhh! We’re Hunting Kobolds
  • Book Return
  • Rare Books

Part of the chain sends you back out to recover eight stolen books from the kobolds, and the drop rate on those is low enough that you will kill a lot of extra mobs getting there. That extra grinding is the point, in practice, since the combined quest and kill experience can carry a Human past level 6 before leaving the starting zone.

The payoff at the end of the chain is a choice of profession manuals rather than a weapon or armor piece. Each one covers a gathering profession, with Mining for Dummies raising Mining skill by 2 and capping it at 15. If you do not already know the profession and have a free slot, using the book teaches it outright. The Skinning and Herbalism versions behave the same way, which means a fresh character can pick up a gathering profession in Northshire instead of running to a trainer in Stormwind.

The chain is worth grabbing on any new Alliance character simply because it sits on a route you are already walking. The kobolds are the same ones the original Northshire quests send you after, so the only real requirement is checking your bags for the book before you move on toward Goldshire.
