Notre-Dame Organ Puzzle Solution in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse — War and Famine Location

Read the zodiac windows, step the floor keys in order, then drop beneath the stairs for the Legendary dual blades.

Read the zodiac windows, step the floor keys in order, then drop beneath the stairs for the Legendary dual blades.

The giant organ in Notre-Dame hides two things at once. Its corrupted purple pipes block your path forward until you play three melodies, and a separate hidden sequence opens a sealed chamber under the stairs that holds the Legendary dual swords, War and Famine. Both puzzles use the same row of zodiac floor keys, so it helps to understand how they work before you start stepping on them.

Quick answer: Read the zodiac windows in the Stained Glass Gallery, note each sign’s candle count, then step on the organ’s matching floor keys in order. Finishing the hidden sequence opens the passage beneath the stairs that leads to War and Famine.

What you need before the organ puzzle

Notre-Dame’s Great Organ Room is where the puzzle is found. Beneath the organ, 14 floor keys form a row, each bearing an engraved zodiac symbol. Touching a key activates it without a button press: walk, jump, or slide over it to make it sink, glow, and sound a chime with a green beam. A dark key means the order was wrong, so begin again at the first one.

The title screen of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse shows a tarot-style card with a Start button before Notre-Dame cathedral under a blood-red moon.

The keys are spread far apart, with the ones at the edges separated by gaps that cannot be crossed on foot. Unlock the air dash movement ability before trying either puzzle. From left to right, the sequence is Aries, Taurus, and Gemini; then Cancer, Leo, and Virgo; followed by Sun, Moon, and Libra; next Scorpio, then Sagittarius, followed by Capricorn and Aquarius, with Pisces last.

Near the organ you can inspect a gold plaque mounted over a locked passage. It reads, “Beneath these stairs lies our order’s greatest sin,” pointing you at the sealed vault below. The trigger for that vault is the hidden sequence, and the clues for it are elsewhere in the cathedral.

The order for the hidden sequence comes from the Stained Glass Gallery, found in the Sealed Scriptorium part of Notre-Dame, up north from the plaque. Each stained glass window carries a zodiac sign at the top and a set of lit candles at its base. The candle count under each sign tells you the step order.

Rose speaks in a dialogue box while Joan stands in armor on a rampart beside a planted sword, with fire and a cathedral behind.
Rose introduces herself as Rose Belmont and asks Joan for her key while the two stand on the rampart before burning Notre-Dame.

Move along the windows from left to right and write down which sign has one candle, which has two, and so on up the row. Step on the floor key with one candle first, then two, then three, continuing in ascending order. One widely seen solution runs through ten keys in this order:

StepZodiac keyFloor position (from left)
1Moon8
2Libra9
3Scorpio10
4Aquarius13
5Capricorn12
6Virgo6
7Sun7
8Leo5
9Cancer4
10Aries1

The candle counts can differ between saves, so trust the windows in your own game over any fixed list. If a key fails to light, re-check the gallery and restart the run from the first key.

Open the hidden passage and confirm it worked

Use walks, jumps, and air dashes to activate the keys in sequence, including the outer symbols. Activating the last key opens a gate to the Great Organ Room’s secret area. Green light flashes at the screen’s left, and the floor under the stairs unlocks.

You will also see the “Complete the hidden puzzle in Notre Dame” notification. That line is one of the Works of Mercy on The Shadow arcana card, which grants the Soul Harvest spell and Double Jump. The step counts once you own the card, whether or not it is equipped at the time.

Where to claim War and Famine

With the floor open, head left out of the organ keys and climb back toward the stairs where the plaque sits. Drop straight down through the newly opened hatch into the vault below. Follow the chamber across and interact with the pedestal to collect War and Famine, the Legendary dual swords.

Tier4
Weapon typeDual swords
Combo finisherBlade Flurry
Mana per hit2
Stagger power30

Built for quick, relentless offense, these blades let you extend a combo by pressing Attack as soon as a strike connects, keeping a target under pressure through a long sequence. The finishing blow leaves a zone that increases your damage as long as you remain inside it. Blade Flurry unleashes a whirling series of hits, making short work of groups.

Among dual swords, War and Famine’s 33 attack power sits above Almace and Hauteclaire, the other pair found in Holy Innocents’ Cemetery, which carries 30 attack power and 75 ATK.

The dual blades’ flurry can launch Rose a long way forward, which is risky in rooms packed with spikes and traps. Use it carefully near hazards.

Clearing the corrupted pipes with the three melodies

Separate from the War and Famine secret, the organ’s corrupted purple pipes block the route onward from the Transept. Inspecting them notes that this is Death’s work on the pipes connected to the organ. A Spirit beneath the stairs in the Great Organ Room explains the fix: find the melodies of Notre-Dame’s Music Masters and play them to clear the corruption. Each melody you complete lights a glowing clef in the pipes and opens another section of the path.

Each Melody Sheet prints its zodiac symbols left to right on a staff. Play the keys in that reading order, not the order the keys sit in on the floor.

You collect the Melody Sheet for the Fugue from the Spirit beneath the stairs in the Great Organ Room. Finishing it flashes the organ green, lights a bass clef among the central pipes, and opens the route toward the Collapsed Crypt.

A Spirit in the Sealed Scriptorium gives you the Sonata sheet and asks you to take the final sonata to heal the cathedral. Completing the melody turns the pipes green, sounds a chord, and opens the way to the right.

At the top of La Flèche, a Spirit offers the Concerto sheet as a cure for Notre-Dame’s misfortune. The melody’s final key illuminates a treble clef among the pipes. Finish all three melodies to clear the corruption, then proceed to the Transept to battle Death’s arcana, The Shadow.
