Hinagiku is a dancer who gets caught up in Dokyo’s experiments, and her story ends in one of the grimmest sequences in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. She is not a companion you can protect, and there is no branching choice that spares her. The encounter is scripted from her capture through to the boss fight that closes it out, and the only thing it leaves behind is a permanent upgrade to Musashi’s armor.
Quick answer: Hinagiku cannot be saved. Complete the “Defeat Hinagiku” objective, and after the fight her spirit is drawn into Musashi’s gauntlet, turning his leg armor into golden greaves.
Reward for defeating Hinagiku: The golden greaves
The payoff for the whole sequence is an armor change rather than a loot drop. Once the boss falls, Hinagiku dissolves into golden light and Okuni asks Musashi to carry her with him. Musashi pulls that light into his gauntlet, and his leg armor visibly changes into glowing golden greaves.
That transformation is your confirmation the encounter is fully resolved. If the greaves have not changed, the absorption cutscene has not played yet, which means the fight or the closing dialogue is still in progress.

How Hinagiku is turned into a Nue
The scene opens on prisoners held in wooden cages while Musashi watches and his gauntlet begins to glow. Dokyo looks over the group and declares they are ideal material for his next Nue, the composite demon he builds out of living bodies.
Hinagiku tries to break out of her cage and is dragged back by Dokyo’s minions, who are ordered to cut her ankles so she cannot run again. Crippled, she apologizes to Okuni before she collapses. Musashi steps in at that point and cuts down the guards, but the damage is already done.
A dark vision follows. Hinagiku counts aloud as her body is painfully fused with the other captives, and the merged mass becomes a Nue. Musashi ends that first creature quickly, splitting the beast in half.
Dokyo’s true form and Yoshitsune’s arrival
With his Nue destroyed, Dokyo starts mourning the loss of his creation. Okuni attacks him mid-complaint and slices through his mask, exposing an unnaturally elongated neck and confirming he is not human.
Minamoto no Yoshitsune then walks in wearing white robes, calm and smiling. He calls Hinagiku out by name, telling her that her friends have come for her, and she crawls out of the darkness as a multi-faced abomination.
The “Defeat Hinagiku” boss fight
Okuni is the one who makes the call. She begs Musashi to kill Hinagiku and end the torment, and control returns to you with the on-screen objective “Defeat Hinagiku.” From there it plays out as a standard boss fight against the multi-faced creature.
Note: the objective text is the clearest signal that the story has moved past the point of no return. There is no rescue path once that prompt appears, so treat the fight as the only way forward.
When the demon goes down, Hinagiku briefly surfaces one last time. Okuni comforts her, and Hinagiku promises they will dance together again in the next life before her body breaks apart into golden light.

Musashi’s gauntlet and what the absorption means
The gauntlet is what ties the scene together. It reacts at the very start when Musashi first sees the caged prisoners, and it is where Hinagiku ends up. Okuni asks Musashi directly whether he can carry her friend inside it.
He absorbs the golden light, and the effect immediately spreads to his legs. The greaves keep their glow afterward, so the upgrade doubles as a visual reminder of who Musashi is carrying. Dokyo and Yoshitsune walk away from the scene intact, which sets up the pair as the ongoing threat behind these transformations rather than a problem solved here.
