Zeki spends most of his time selling goods he probably shouldn’t be selling, and his third friendship quest finally lets you see what he’s been building in the back room. Magical Mystery Machine is a multi-day errand that asks for a specific metal, a living source of magic, and a trip into his bedroom to test the finished contraption.
Quick answer: Reach friendship level 3 with Zeki, show him an Iron Bar so he identifies the metal, hand over 5 Iron Bars, wait one in-game day for his letter, bring him a glowing bug or fish such as a Paper Lantern Bug, then use the Douplifier in his room and speak to him again.
Requirements to unlock Magical Mystery Machine
The quest only appears once you hit friendship level 3 with Zeki, the tier labelled Willing Accomplice, and only after his two earlier friendship quests are done. Those are Wares in Low Places and Spread the Word, in that order.
Friendship climbs fastest through daily gifts. Zeki likes any fish, dishes cooked with fish, ore of any type, Copper Bars, Iron Bars, and generally anything with a high sale value. One gift per day is enough to move him steadily, and rarer fish push the meter harder.
When the requirements are met, Zeki carries an exclamation point above his head. He’s usually behind the counter at the General Store in Kilima Village, though he also turns up at the Underground black market. Talk to him and he’ll explain that he needs the right metal so his machine doesn’t blow up in a customer’s face.

You’ll know it worked when the seed count in your inventory reads two Apple Tree Seeds and the reward screen appears after that final conversation. Zeki mentions he plans to offer the machine to Badruu once the prototype is finished.
Iron Bar totals and where to mine Iron Ore
Each Iron Bar takes 5 Iron Ore, so the five-bar delivery costs 25 Iron Ore. The bar you show Zeki during the identification step can push the practical total to six, so mining 30 ore leaves you with no gaps. Smelting works in either a Basic Smelter or a Heavy Smelter.
If you’d rather skip the mining entirely, the Blacksmith sells Iron Bars for 260 Gold each.
| Iron Ore location | Notes |
|---|---|
| Cliff edges, hilltops, rock formations | Spread across both northern and southern Bahari Bay |
| Pavel Mines | Reliable indoor node cluster |
| Small unmarked caves east of Tamala’s House | Easy to miss on the map |
| Caves slightly southeast of Hideaway Bluffs | Also unmarked |
Note: Iron Ore nodes appear only in Bahari Bay, so there’s no point searching Kilima Valley for them.
Glowing bugs and fish Zeki accepts
Six creatures are confirmed to satisfy the magic source step. Glow Worms, despite the name, are not accepted.
| Creature | Where and when to catch it |
|---|---|
| Paper Lantern Bug | Northern and southern Bahari Bay, 6PM to 3AM |
| Bahari Glowbug | Southern Bahari Bay around Pulsewater Plains, Hideaway Bluff, and Beachcomber Cove, 6PM to 3AM |
| Enchanted Pupfish | Fisherman’s Lagoon and the Kilima Valley coasts, using Glow Worm bait, any time of day |
| Crimson Fangtooth | Fished up; accepted by Zeki |
| Mutated Angler | Fished up; accepted by Zeki |
| Energized Piranha | Fished up; accepted by Zeki |
The Paper Lantern Bug is the low-effort pick. It’s classed as common, it doesn’t need an upgraded Bug Catching belt, and it turns up in forests and along coastlines all over Bahari Bay after dark, including Proudhorn Pass, Flooded Steps, and Statue Garden. Throw a Smoke Bomb from a distance, then pick it up off the ground.

Zeki’s Key is the real prize for anyone planning ahead. Permanent access to his bedroom is a prerequisite for Tish’s level 4 quest, Make ‘Em Sing, which asks you to plant a Singing Stone in there.
Common reasons the quest stalls
- You’re showing the wrong bar. Copper, Silver, and Gold produce flavour dialogue only, and Palium is refused outright. Only Iron moves the objective forward.
- The letter hasn’t arrived yet. Zeki’s mail needs a full in-game day to pass before it lands in your plot mailbox, and the magic source step won’t appear until you read it.
- You brought a Glow Worm. It glows, but it isn’t on the accepted list.
- You planted the test seed. If you take the Apple Tree Seed Zeki hands you and plant it on your plot before using the Douplifier, you’ll need to replace it. Recycle Apples in a Seed Collector, complete Nai’o’s level 3 friendship quest, or try your luck with Zeki’s Wondrous Machine.
Once the Douplifier has done its trick and Zeki has thanked you, the friendship line continues with Bugs Everywhere!, and the key stays in your inventory for good. Keep gifting him fish in the meantime and the next quest won’t be far behind.
