Butchering turns a Pal you no longer need into a stack of materials, and the payoff depends entirely on the species you process. Some Pals hand over Large Pal Souls, others give leather, ingots, Gold Coins, or rare schematics. The trick is picking the right Pal for the resource you are short on, then squeezing two drop rolls out of every one you butcher.
Quick answer: Capture the Pal first, then butcher the captured Pal with a Meat Cleaver. Capturing pays out its drop table once, and butchering rolls the same table a second time, so a single Pal gives you both hauls. Breed the species you want in bulk and feed them through a Pal Disassembly Conveyor to farm materials continuously.

Why capturing beats killing: the double drop roll
A killed Pal in the open world gives you one roll on its drop table. A captured Pal that you then butcher gives you two full rolls. Catching the Pal awards its drops, and running a Meat Cleaver over the captured Pal rolls the same table again, completely fresh. You lose the Pal but keep everything it produced, and you still record the Paldeck entry.
As an example, a captured Mammorest hands over 5 to 10 Leather, and butchering it rolls another 5 to 10. For any material you are farming in volume, capture-then-butcher is always the stronger play.
How to increase drops from butchering
Several bonuses stack on top of the capture-and-butcher payout. Combine them on a dedicated farming run and the same Pal produces noticeably more materials.

Both drop passives affect only the Pal that carries them, never your party or your base output, and they do nothing to boss or dungeon loot. Breed the Pals you want to butcher
A butcher operation only pays off once you have a steady supply of Pals to process, and breeding gives you that. Pair a carrier of the drop passive with the species whose drops you need, and the offspring inherit from both parents’ passive pools. Check each egg, keep the best result, and breed it forward.

Butchering tools: Meat Cleaver and Pal Disassembly Conveyor
You need a tool before butchering produces anything. The Meat Cleaver comes first and works one Pal at a time; the Pal Disassembly Conveyor handles many Pals later.
For bulk farming, the Pal Disassembly Conveyor automates the processing at Technology Level 54. You still load Pals in by hand, and you collect the output at the other end, so keep Pals with Transporting suitability nearby to carry drops into storage instead of leaving them on the ground.

The conveyor draws power, so build a Power Generator and assign a Pal that produces electricity to run it. Pairing a round-the-clock breeding farm with the conveyor makes material collection a background task.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mimogs you butcher yourself do not drop Mog Coins. Those come only from wild Mimogs, though bred Mimogs still give Gold Coins and Extra-Large Training Manuals.
- Butchering is treated as an illegal act. If an NPC sees you do it, you become wanted, so butcher away from guards.
- Putting a drop passive on a combat Pal wastes it. Service-Minded and Lavish Hospitality only affect the Pal carrying them, and only on capture or butchering, so boss and raid loot stays unchanged.
The most valuable long-term output is Pal Souls, which come in Small, Medium, and Large. You can break larger souls into smaller ones or combine smaller ones upward, and a Crusher even converts Large Pal Souls into Giant Pal Souls. Feed them into a Statue of Power to permanently strengthen the Pals you actually fight with. That loop, breeding cheap Pals into souls and souls into a stronger roster, is what makes a butcher line worth building once you have the tools and a species picked out.
