Essence of Desolation arrived with the Path of Exile: Mirage League as a fresh crafting item, and it earned a following fast thanks to the strong set of modifiers it could stamp onto gear. That window has closed. As of patch 3.29, the Essence is drop-disabled and cannot be farmed, because it only ever existed inside the Mirage mechanic.
Quick answer: Essence of Desolation is unobtainable because the Mirage League did not go core in patch 3.29. Its drops are disabled, and the Atlas passive that let you produce its mods on rare items was fixed in patch 3.29.3.
Why Essence of Desolation stopped dropping in patch 3.29
The Essence was tied entirely to the Mirage. You obtained it from a monster trapped in an Essence inside the copied area the Mirage generated, so it never dropped from the regular game world. Since it wasn’t a guaranteed reward, the reliable approach was to invest in Essence-focused nodes on the Atlas Passive Tree to raise your odds.

When the Mirage League mechanic was not carried into patch 3.29, the entire system left the game. With no Mirage to generate those copied areas, there is no monster to release the Essence, and its drops are turned off. That is the single reason you can no longer add it to your collection.
The Atlas passive workaround closed in patch 3.29.3
For a short stretch after the Mirage ended, there was still a way to roll these modifiers. The Atlas passive that reads “Imprisoned Monsters in your Maps have a chance to drop an additional Rare Item with an Essence Modifier” could still produce items carrying Essence of Desolation mods.
Patch 3.29.3 removed that behavior. After the fix, that passive no longer generates items with these modifiers. If you already own a piece of gear rolled with one of them, treat it as the last of its kind for the current League.

Will Essence of Desolation return to Path of Exile
A comeback is plausible. The most likely path back is the Mirage League mechanic eventually going core, which would bring the Essence along with it. That is not confirmed for any specific date, and reworking a League mechanic for permanent inclusion takes time.
Mercenaries offers a useful precedent. That system was popular when it first launched, then disappeared before making its return with the Curse of the Allflame League. A similar pattern could apply here, but until the Mirage is prepared to go core, there is no way to acquire Essence of Desolation, and no official return date has been announced.
