Time passes quickly in Permafrost, and nightfall can bring deadly cold before morning if you are still exposed. The game clock appears along the top of the screen, immediately after the temperature and thermometer readouts. Its display continues advancing even with menus or your inventory on screen. Track its pace, sunrise, and the onset of freezing warnings to judge how long you can remain outside before seeking a fire or bed.
Quick answer: On Story, a full day runs about 33 real minutes (roughly 1.4 real minutes per in-game hour). On Survival the sunrise banner showed at 04:31, and the freezing “BONE-CHILLING COLD” warning starts near 19:00.
How long a Permafrost day lasts
On Story difficulty the clock advanced from 13:39 to 20:34 in about 9.5 real minutes. The Survival clock was not timed cleanly, so treat the Story figure as the one you can plan around. Check the clock before you leave a fire or a settlement, so you are not surprised by the dark.

Morning is announced by a banner reading “THE SUN IS RISING” with the line “Temperature will rise”. On Survival this banner appeared at 04:31 on two separate mornings.
When the cold starts at night
Night brings colder readings, but how dangerous it is depends heavily on your difficulty. The table below compares what happens at the starting cabin.
| Story | Survival | |
|---|---|---|
| Night readout at the cabin | -27°C | -33°C to -34°C |
| Day readout at the cabin | -21°C | -26°C to -27°C |
| Cold warning in starting clothes | None | BONE-CHILLING COLD from ~19:00 |
| Sunrise banner seen | On waking, ~06:00 | 04:31 |
On Survival
At the starting cabin, the temperature display read -27°C at 15:00. By 19:10, it had fallen to between -33°C and -34°C. At 19:03, “BONE-CHILLING COLD” appeared, with frost around the screen edges. The starting clothes are rated [-26°C], which was not enough for a Survival night. Around 07:00, the display had returned to -26°C to -27°C, the BONE-CHILLING COLD effect was gone, and Health stopped declining even with Body Warmth at 0.
On Survival, get to a lit Campfire, the starting cabin, or Horizon by 19:00 so you are sheltered before the freezing warning appears.

On Story
Story nights are much milder. At the same cabin, the nighttime reading was -27°C, compared with -21°C during the day. No cold banner appeared, and Body Warmth remained at 300/300 even outdoors. The Hunter’s starting clothes, rated to protect down to about -27°C, were enough; a Story night at the cabin does not require you to go inside as Survival does.

Seeing in the dark with the flashlight
Nights are genuinely dark, so keep a light ready. Press L to turn the flashlight on and off. The same toggle sits on the Radial Menu, which you open by holding Q. The Radial Menu also gives you quick access to emotes and building mode.
Sleeping to skip the night
Sleeping fast-forwards through the dark hours. You need a claimed bed, and if you are in the cold you also need a heat source nearby.

You know it worked when the screen fades, the clock jumps forward to morning, and the sunrise banner appears as you wake. Sleep did not always end at the same hour, so expect to wake somewhere in the early morning rather than at a fixed time.
At -27°C outdoors, the bed would not allow rest and displayed “TOO COLD TO REST. YOU NEED A HEAT SOURCE!”. Setting a lit Campfire next to the bed resolved the issue, and Sleep then worked. Building a Campfire costs Stone x2.
Snowstorms during the cycle
A snowstorm can roll in by day or at night. A snow-cloud icon appears to the right of the clock when one is active, and it ends with the banner “STORM IS CLEARING: Temperature will rise, Visibility will increase”. A storm drops the temperature while it lasts, so it adds to the cold pressure on top of the normal night chill.
Hunger and energy as time passes
The clock affects more than daylight and cold. While awake in Story, Hunger dropped around 5 points per real minute, so spending a long day outdoors steadily uses up food. Energy also decreases while you are awake. In Story, it reached 0 and displayed “Exhausted” after around 62 game hours without sleep. Sleeping in a bed with a fire beside it is the cleanest way to reset the clock and your condition before returning to the cold.
