Permafrost: How to Get and Build the Barrel Brazier

The Barrel Brazier is a heat source in Permafrost: a barrel you place on the snow, fuel with Coal and light. The recipe is a world pickup. You unlock it by finding a recipe note out in the world, and once it is yours, placing one costs almost nothing.

Quick answer: Pick up the “Recipe” note in a cave in the Woods near Hunter’s Glade, then build the Barrel Brazier from the Survival tab of the BUILDING menu for 2 Scrap and feed Coal into its fuel slot.

Where to find the Barrel Brazier recipe

The recipe lies on the ground in a cave in the Woods, close to Hunter’s Glade. It is the same cave that holds Gold Boulders. Head inside and look for a snowy shelf with a collapsed tent tarp and a skeleton lying on the snow. A small pickup labelled “Recipe” sits on the ground right beside them.

Approach the note and press F to collect it. RECIPE UNLOCKED appears in a banner, with BARREL BRAZIER below, confirming you have learned the recipe. Check the skeleton nearby as well; it contains a few Bucks.

What you need to build one

The Building Tool equipped.
2 Scrap to cover the placement cost.
Coal to use as fuel once it is down.

How to place the Barrel Brazier

Bring up the BUILDING menu with the Building Tool equipped. Open the Survival tab beside Furniture and Utilities. At the top of its list is Barrel Brazier, followed by Bed and Campfire.

Choose the item to reveal a counter beneath its placement preview. It lists your Scrap and the required amount, such as 45/2. You can place it if the first figure is at least 2.

Position the green barrel ghost on the ground and confirm placement. A short bar of about 1 second runs, and the display shows “-2 Scrap” as the materials are deducted.

Where you can and cannot place it

The barrel goes straight onto snow, outdoors or inside a cave, with no foundation needed. It will not place inside a No-Build Zone, which settlements have. Watch for the “ENTERING No-Build Zone” and “LEAVING No-Build Zone” banners and set the barrel down only after the LEAVING banner shows. Inside the zone the preview turns red with “NO-BUILD ZONE”.

A Cold Zone is a valid placement area if you choose a spot beyond any No-Build Zone. That lets the added warmth help where it is needed.

How to fuel and light the brazier

Look at the placed barrel. The prompt reads “Barrel Brazier” with “Press F Open”. Press F to open its panel.

The panel title is BRAZIER. Its only section is FUEL: a circular dial tracks remaining time and reads 0s when empty. Below are two fuel slots and a TURN ON button; the panel has no cooking slots.

Put Coal in a fuel slot, then activate TURN ON. The button changes to TURN OFF to indicate the brazier is burning. After 15 Coal were moved in, the slot displayed a stack of 14, while the dial showed 29m immediately after ignition.

What it does for your warmth

The temperature value beside the thermometer icon at the top of the screen responds when you stand by a lit Barrel Brazier. During one cold night, it showed -33°C as the barrel was placed; a few seconds after lighting, it read 15°C beside the lit barrel. That was inside a Cold Zone, with the COLD ZONE banner displayed and Body Warmth at 0/300.

That 15°C is a single reading on one night, not a fixed value.

Barrel Brazier or Campfire?

Both items appear under Survival, so they can be mistaken for each other. For 2 Stone, a Campfire opens a COOKING panel containing a PRIMARY ingredient slot and can also cook. Barrel Brazier takes 2 Scrap and only provides fuel, with no cooking option.
