Prison of Husks is a dark fantasy action game with a low-poly, retro look that recalls early 3D survival horror. It puts you in gothic castles, dungeons, and cathedral-sized fortresses, moving between quiet exploration and fast sword fights against doll-like enemies. The developer has now locked a launch date and opened a demo, so you can try it before the full release.

Try the Steam demo before launch

A playable demo is live on Steam ahead of the full release. It is the fastest way to see how the combat and exploration feel on PC before you commit to the January 27, 2027 launch. The demo appears on the game’s Steam listing, where you can also wishlist it to be notified at release.

What Prison of Husks is

You play through a crumbling world of vaulted chambers, courtyards, foyers hung with red banners, and underground stone vaults. The visual style leans hard into a retro presentation, using a 4:3 frame, soft scanline edges, and fixed, cinematic camera angles instead of a modern free camera. Action scenes carry no visible HUD, health bars, or objective markers, which keeps the screen clean and the mood heavy.

Story beats come through on-screen prompts and a diary. Text cards such as “Are you bereft of desire?”, “Traverse this world”, “Do not falter…”, and “Seek Your Beloved” frame the journey between scenes. A sketchbook records handwritten “Knights Virtues” like kindness, with notes urging you to care for the few people that remain.

Two protagonists appear. One is a pale, doll-like figure with silver hair, wrapped in bandages and cloth, dressed in a short tunic and armed with twin swords. The other is a dark-haired girl in a Victorian-style green or purple dress, carrying an umbrella, a satchel, and the journal.

Combat and enemies

Fights are quick and close. The sword character dual-wields blades and mixes fast melee strikes, dodges, overhead leaping attacks, and parry or deflection moves. Encounters play out in courtyards near wells and carriages, on rooftops, and across checkered-floor chambers.

Enemies range from white, mannequin-like husks to winged monstrosities. One duel pits you against a sword-bearing doll on a checkered floor, and larger creatures break up the human-shaped foes.

Exploration and setting

Between battles you push open heavy iron gates, ride cage lifts and elevators, climb staircases, and follow companions through interiors. The world opens outward toward a monolithic fortress reached by a long stone bridge, with a wide shot of a towering span rising into the clouds.
