How to start the deed quest, hold onto the title deed, and turn it in for 1000 ore and Santino’s key.

The Special Pieces quest is a side mission added for the Gothic 1 Remake, so anyone who played the 2001 original will not recognize it. It starts with a trader named Santino in the Old Mine, who wants the title deed to the mountain fortress. The catch is that Santino does not stay in the mine. He relocates partway through the story, which is why a lot of players get stuck holding a deed with nobody to sell it to.

Quick answer: Talk to Santino in the Old Mine to start the quest, get the title deed from Lester at the mountain fortress in Chapter 3, then turn it in to Santino at his new shop above Fisk’s place in the Old Camp after the Old Mine floods. Accept his offer to receive 1000 ore and Santino’s key.

Start the Special Pieces quest by talking to Santino in the Old Mine

Travel to the Old Mine from the Old Camp. Bring a torch before you go inside, since the tunnels are dark and you will struggle to spot anyone without one.

Head past Drake and cross the wooden bridge. Santino and his shop are set up in this area of the mine.
Talk to Santino and bring up trading. He explains that he only deals in unusual items and offers similar goods in return. He does not spell out exactly what he wants, but this conversation is what adds the Special Pieces quest to your log, asking you to bring him the deed to the mountain fortress.

Get the title deed from Lester at the mountain fortress in Chapter 3

The deed itself is not something you grab on day one. It becomes available in Chapter 3, when you explore the mountain fortress alongside Lester. While clearing the area, Lester finds the deed to the fortress and the surrounding mountains, then hands it to you and asks you to find a buyer so the two of you can split the proceeds.

This plays out differently from the original release. In the 2001 game, Lester traded the Title Deed for Telekinesis scrolls. In the remake, he gives you both the scrolls and the deed, so you keep the document to sell on.

Tip: Do not sell the deed to any other trader by accident. If you offload it, you lose your only way to finish the quest.

Find Santino in the Old Camp after the Old Mine floods

Later in the story, the Old Mine floods and everyone is forced to evacuate, Santino included. Going back to the mine to hand over the deed will not work, because he is no longer there. He moves to the Old Camp and reopens his shop in his new spot above Fisk’s place.

Make your way to the Old Camp and head to Fisk’s place. Santino’s shop sits above it, which is where he settles after the flood.
Offer him the deed. He is clearly interested but refuses to settle on a flat pile of ore. Instead he promises 1000 ore plus something that ore alone cannot buy.
Accept his offer to complete the Special Pieces quest. Follow Santino afterward, and he reveals a secret passage to the castle cellar and hands you Santino’s key for it.

You know the quest is finished when the journal updates after you accept Santino’s deal and he leads you to the passage. The key landing in your inventory is the final confirmation.

Common reasons the quest fails to complete

A known bug can lock you out of the quest. If you clear the mountain fortress before starting Special Pieces, Lester will not interact with you, which means you never receive the deed. The same problem appears if you give the Focus Stone to Saturas too early in your playthrough. To stay safe, speak to Santino in the Old Mine before you finish off the fortress, and avoid handing the Focus Stone over ahead of time.

It is also possible to kill Santino for his weapon, the Thorn of Wounds, which deals 18 edge damage. It is not a standout blade, and removing a non-hostile trader ends your chance to turn in the deed normally, so killing him only makes sense as a roleplay choice.
