GSC Game World’s first story expansion for Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl finally lets you set foot inside the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, a place the base game only showed briefly during its opening. Called Cost of Hope, the expansion also opens up a second new region and layers fresh weapons, gear, hubs, and quests over an already enormous game.

Quick answer: Cost of Hope arrives 20th August for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. You access it in-game by playing as Skif and following the PDA notification that appears as the main storyline progresses.

Cost of Hope release date and platforms

Cost of Hope launches on 20th August across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It is the first major expansion for Heart of Chornobyl and was first shown at an Xbox Partner Preview in March. GSC has confirmed it packs “dozens of hours of content,” so it is a substantial addition rather than a quick side story. The price has not been confirmed.

Two new regions: Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Iron Forest

The expansion adds two areas of the Zone that were off-limits in the base game. Both bring their own hub areas, activities to uncover, quests to complete, and mutants to fight, alongside new weapons and gear.

RegionWhat it adds
Chornobyl Nuclear Power PlantPreviously only glimpsed in the game’s intro; now fully explorable, with a new hub, quests, activities, and mutants.
Iron ForestA maze-like network of paths with its own hub, uncharted locations, quests, and mutant encounters.

How to start Cost of Hope in-game

Install the expansion and load into Heart of Chornobyl as Skif. Cost of Hope plays out alongside the main campaign rather than as a separate save or standalone mode.
Keep progressing the main storyline. The expansion content unlocks in step with your progress, not all at once from the start.
Watch for a PDA notification. When it appears, it points you toward the new content, confirming that the expansion is available to enter. That prompt is how you know it is active.

The Duty vs Freedom choice

Cost of Hope drops you into a conflict between the Duty and Freedom factions. One side wants to destroy the Zone, while the other wants to live alongside it. You are forced to pick a side, and the choices you make carry consequences that reach beyond the Zone itself. This choice-based storyline runs parallel to the events of Heart of Chornobyl.

Where Cost of Hope fits in the STALKER trilogy

GSC has framed Cost of Hope as the middle chapter of the second STALKER trilogy. A future story DLC is planned to form a larger narrative arc within the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. saga, so this expansion is a bridge rather than a finale.

Which editions include Cost of Hope

Access depends on which version you own. The Ultimate Edition includes a Season Pass that covers two additional expansions and any future DLCs, which means Cost of Hope is included. The Deluxe Edition does not include the Season Pass, so it does not cover this expansion. You can check edition details on the official Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl store listing.

EditionIncludes Cost of Hope
Ultimate EditionYes — Season Pass covers two expansions and future DLCs
Deluxe EditionNo — Season Pass not included

If you have been holding off on returning to the Zone, the 20th August launch is a clear point to jump back in. Between the power plant, the Iron Forest, and a faction decision that echoes across the campaign, Cost of Hope gives long-time Stalkers a concrete reason to load up Skif again.
