Sting of the Scorpid Quest Guide in World of Warcraft (Valley of Trials)

Find the Scorpid Workers north of the Mottled Boars, collect their tails, and turn the quest back in to Gornek.

Find the Scorpid Workers north of the Mottled Boars, collect their tails, and turn the quest back in to Gornek.

Sting of the Scorpid is one of the first errands new orcs and trolls pick up in the Valley of Trials, the sheltered starting zone tucked inside Durotar. The task sounds simple, but the quest tracking circle is misleading: it lights up the boar fields, while the creatures you actually need live farther north.

Quick answer: Grab the quest from Gornek, run north past the Mottled Boars into the rocky canyon, kill Scorpid Workers, loot a Scorpid Worker Tail from each, then return to Gornek to hand it in.

Where to pick up Sting of the Scorpid

The quest is offered by Gornek, who sits by the fire in the Den. He is the same Horde trainer who hands out most of the early Valley of Trials tasks, so you will already know where to find him after your first few quests.

It is a low-level Horde quest that follows the opening chain, arriving after Cutting Teeth and the early Valley of Trials steps. In World of Warcraft Classic the objective asks for 10 Scorpid Worker Tails, while the current retail version asks for 8. The rest of the process is identical.

Where Scorpid Workers spawn in the Valley of Trials

The blue objective ring covers a wide stretch of ground that is mostly filled with Level 2 Mottled Boars. Those boars are not what you want. Scorpid Workers are Level 3 beasts that spawn farther north, in the rocky canyon beyond the boar grounds. Gornek’s own directions point you northwest of the Den toward the same scorpid territory.

Do not waste time fighting the Mottled Boars. They do not drop tails, so run past them and keep heading toward the canyon until you see the scorpids.

How to collect the Scorpid Worker Tails

Accept Sting of the Scorpid from Gornek in the Den and open your map to see the objective area.
Run north out of the boar fields and into the rocky canyon. Ignore the Mottled Boars along the way; the Scorpid Workers are grouped in the scorpid territory beyond them.

Engage a Level 3 Scorpid Worker and defeat it. They are weak, so a few attacks are usually enough at this level.
Loot the corpse and take the Scorpid Worker Tail. Your quest tracker ticks up each time, for example from 0/10 to 1/10.

Repeat on the surrounding Scorpid Workers until you have every tail the quest needs. Not every kill is guaranteed to drop a tail, so keep clearing scorpids until the counter is full.

Turning in the quest to Gornek

Once the tail counter reads its full amount, head back to Gornek in the Den and complete the quest. Handing it in awards the experience and reputation above and lets you pick your reward, which confirms it is done.

If you are unsure whether you already finished it on a character, you can check with a chat command. In Classic, type the following and it prints whether the quest is flagged complete.

/run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(789))

On retail, swap the ID for the current version of the quest by using /run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(25127)) instead. From here, Gornek and the other Valley of Trials trainers will point you toward the next steps in the starting chain, including Lazy Peons and Vile Familiars.
