Stranger Than Heaven Launches January 2027 With Tupac as Amaru

Stranger Than Heaven, the next game from Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, now has a launch window and a headline-grabbing addition to its cast. The reveal came during Summer Game Fest 2026, where a new trailer set the release for January 2027 and showed Tupac Shakur stepping out of the shadows in an open-chest kimono and his signature paisley bandana. Tupac plays a character named Amaru, with his likeness added under the supervision of his estate.

Quick answer: Stranger Than Heaven launches in January 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and Tupac Shakur appears in it as a character called Amaru.

Stranger Than Heaven release date and platforms

The trailer ended with a January 2027 launch date, narrowing the earlier winter release window the studio had previously signaled. The game is confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. No exact day or release time has been confirmed, so treat January 2027 as the firm window until a precise date is shared.

Tupac Shakur plays Amaru, built without AI

Tupac, who died in 1996, appears as a character named Amaru. That name carries weight, since Amaru is also the birth name his mother gave him. Snoop Dogg appeared on stage at Summer Game Fest to explain that the rapper's likeness was added with the full permission of his estate.

"The Tupac estate and my son and myself, we work very closely together," Snoop Dogg said during the presentation. "So it just made sense to put him in this game, because his likeness and his spirit still lives on; I just felt like it was so connected to what we're doing."

Sega confirmed the character is supervised by Tupac's estate, Amaru Entertainment, and stressed that no AI was used in building him. The studio said his design draws on archival footage and photographs, created in close collaboration with the estate. Further details about his role in the story are set to follow at a later date.

Tupac joins a large ensemble that mixes Japanese and international talent. Snoop Dogg is credited alongside his son, Cordell Broadus, and the late actor Bunta Sugawara also appears through a recreated likeness, much like Tupac.

Story and setting

The game opens in 1915 and follows Makoto Daito, a young man born to an American father and a Japanese mother. His father was a man of industry who traveled widely before settling the family in his American hometown, where he died soon after their arrival.

Left without that protection, Makoto and his mother face heavy prejudice. After his mother also dies, Makoto reaches a turning point. He can stay in a dangerous America or move to Japan, his mother's home country, where he might finally fit in among people who look like him. Executive director Masayoshi Yokoyama framed that decision as the heart of the journey.

The story spans multiple eras across Japan, moving through Kokura in Fukuoka in 1915, Kure in Hiroshima in 1929, Minami in Osaka in 1943, Atami in Shizuoka in 1951, and on to Kamurocho. That structure tracks Makoto's generational path through the country over several decades.

With a January 2027 window now locked in, the remaining unknown is how Amaru fits into Makoto's story, and the studio has promised those details closer to launch. For now, the headline is clear. Stranger Than Heaven arrives in January 2027, and Tupac will be part of it.
